What is the bore diameter?  I have a Lyle Line throw gun that is 2 1/2 inch and take coors beer cans.  A beer can full of cament makes a great hole in targets out past 1000 yard!

Powderhead,
Drop kaintuck a PM. He had his wheels for his cannon made by an Amish fellow, and they were not nearly that much money.

Some day I intend to get a Lyle Gun. Not sure if the ASSRA is the correct place as it is a muzzle loader but they sure are interesting.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)    Paul Barnett's business is is a great source for all sorts of info and supplies. Studying their catalogue is an education in itself

I also noted a book by Matt Switlick on BP artillery.   Both guys are incredibly knowledgeable.

Paul has been building replacement guns for the National Park Service for years to replace the originals scattered all over the nations battlefields.
He has also done numerous live fire accompaniments with major orchestras performing the 1812 Overture. he has a whole battery of Lyles for that purpose.
Matt has coordinated all sorts of BP artillery live fire events and was the first guy who recreated the Ferguson rifle.  If I recall correctly he also coordinated the live fire and impact recording for the sound effects for "Master and Commander"
Both guys have been expert wittnesses in BP cannon accidents and gave major testimony in Washington when the ATF was trying to shut down private BP ownership some years back.
They are two of the unsung heros of our sports

Hey guys!  Thank you all so much for the nice comments and tips for finding the things I need to go along with my new single shot.  Time and the  weather has gotten away with me, as I had wanted to build a temporary pedestal to mount this thing on out in the front yard.  With all I have going on, I know that it will be awhile before I get it mounted on a real carriage, and it deserves to be displayed somewhere other than my shop floor.  I will post more pictures as I continue to work on it.  Thanks again!

Nice job on the barrel Powderhead. Have you considered a disappearing carriage like the one on my coastal defense gun? You could shoot at the neighbors and they'd never know who did it.  Wink

No no, I keep the breechblock down in the basement. That way nobody can shoot it when I'm not there. Ya have to be responsible with these big guns. Some dummy might lobb one into downtown Victoria BC.  Smiley

VERY COOL Joe, thanks for the tour and for "the rest of the story"

I'll read more from the site tonight.  My question is, who manned those big gun emplacements ?  Was it national guard, regular Army, or Coast Guardsmen ?

There were two 10" disapearing rifles on Grande island off Subic bay in the phillipines circa 1965-66. They were supposed to be transferred to the smithsonian for preservation. Somehow they ended up I believe on the west coast. One of the sponsors at graybeards had taken pics. Well the shrapnel scars looked kinda familiar. Dug out the pics and the scars matched up. Sent copies to one of the sponsors and they matched. small world. Frank

There's something I've always wondered about those 'disappearing' guns. How can anything mounted behind massive concrete and stone abutments that belches 75 foot sheets of flame and smoke clouds as large as a four story house manage to disappear in a convincing manner? Oh Gawd, how I'd love to pull the lanyard on one of  things even if it was loaded with blanks! Yeah, I know, that has profound Freudian implications.  Wink Well sometimes a 16 inch coastal defense gun is just --- a 16 inch coastal defense gun. Roll Eyes
