Just off the top of my head, Helm was an employee of Winchester during the late 1800s and designed the key features of the first standardized schuetzen style rifle that they built since he was an enthusiastic shooter in the discipline.  Later Laudensack did about the same thing for the other well known variant of the schuetzen rifle based on a 'wall.  More details are available in the two books which extensively describe history and features of the Winchester SS rifle by John Campbell.
