Who made this sight? (Read 3997 times)

	Did some trading for a Marlin Ballard ( #4 perfection in 38-55) last week. Just wondering who made this sight, a friend says they are not common. The rear sight is a later Marble flip up and the tang sight is from someone who obviously didn't understand the concept of a vernier. 	Looks like something Harry Pope put on rifles at Stevens. Look in Ray Smith's "Pope Rifle Barrels" book in the chapter on Stevens-Pope. Gary Ft Wayne, IN

	Both Stevens and Winchester used that type of sight, check Nick Stroebel's book. Mfg. not stated, but I believe they were made by Stevens.

	I have a similar front sight on a Farrow. Mine is lacking the inserts and the clip to hold the inserts in place. Do any of the modern inserts fit?

	Looks like the Ballard windgauge sight to me. A flip up barrel sight on a Ballard? Need pictures of all. I read your post yet again and it sounds like the rifle has three sights. The front sight, a tang sight and a Marbles flip up??? Joe.

	I don't have any of ref. books mentioned. Yes, 3 sights, The Marbles is definitely a newer addition as is the tang sight. The windage adjustable front sight looks like it may well be original. The barrel is 30" long and 1" at the breech and 7/8+ at the muzzle. I spent some time fire lapping the bore, mostly scrubbing the lead out after each shot. I'm not sure if it will ever shoot well.

	Rather than go to all the trouble of firelapping where you have no control over the lapping process you could cast a lap and do it correctly. It may shoot very well if done right. (Assuming it has decent rifling.) Last week I finished lapping a barrel that had four rings in the bore and wouldnt keep ten shots on paper at 200 yards. The last target I shot with it held them in the 23 ring with globe and peep no wind flags. Joe.
