Joe, I never said anything about rifles being the same.
First of all, none of this is etched in stone, proven, etc., etc., but, let us take a standard right twist barrel.Shooting in a left wind your slug will drift right and down,no? In a right wind, that slug will drift left and up. So there is an element effecting our slug in two planes, horizontal and vertical. What about that slug gives us the vertical component of wind drift? Could the number of impressions, depth of them, and their particular configuration come into play? Quite a few shooters in quite a few precision rifle disciplines tend to believe they do. Play chase sometime. [/quote]

Tim,
Playing chase with two rifles, two separate shooters in an uncontrolled environment is not what I would call proper "scientific control " .  I have played chase before. I have shot many rifles in bench matches and cant say one way or the other about wind drift effect on number of grooves. I do know that most lead bullet records were established with eight groove barrels. based on that I'd have to say the eight groove barrel is the least effected by the wind. Once again my opinion is not based on any test results obtained through proper " scientic control" but rather based on my observations.
If I happen to be at a match where someone has a rifle with eight grooves, is shooting exactly the same bullet I am at exactly the same FPS I might, if I remember, shoot a game of chase. The chances of that happening are slim. Are we splitting hairs? I'm sure of that, but is fun to kick around.  Wink

The 8-groover is the least impacted by wind????? Gee, I wonder why no maker of match grade BR barrels, rimfire or centerfire, makes an 8-groove barrel. none, nada, nobody??? Play chase again. Play it with an 8 and a 3, an  8 and a 2, and 8 a 4, I will fathom an educated guess as to your results.

Tim, You are now resorting to comparing apples and oranges. I'm out of hairs to split. You win!  Wink

From my personal experience with Bolt guns I think tim_s knows what he's talking about. I'm also guessing that Tim has done some shooting past the 200 yd mark  Smiley

Thanks. With respect to Joe's comment   I just figured that spinning projectiles shot downrange with a given number of engraved marks on them fighting a crosswind was pretty much apples to apples??? Maybe not.  Undecided

I have 2 RKS Gain twist barrels in .33 which is going to end up as .33-47, one with 6 grooves and the other with 8 grooves, both to be chambered by a new Manson reamer, hence the rifles are not finish yet I can’t provide any results yet but will gladly return to you when the test starts between the two barrels.

My brass is from RMC and I have several mould made from PJ for my project.

I am also interested in any further results you might make.

I am short of one Stevens 44˝ DST action or rifle for the project

My .32 Shilen barrels have 8 grooves. I think the 2, 3, & 4 groove are the uncommon ones.

As far as lead bullet barrels go I agree with you Jeff.  After all thats what we normally talk about on this forum.  Wink

Then I guess I'm the odd guy, my 32 barrel has 7 grooves.

Tim, I just copied this from wikipedia. They have a lot of stuff about exterior ballistics. If you read all of the article on wind drift you'll find its a lot more complicated than we think. As far as apples and oranges I was refering to your comparison of lead bullet rifles and hp rifles.  Smiley

Wind has a range of effects, the first being the effect of making the bullet deviate to the side. From a scientific perspective, the "wind pushing on the side of the bullet" is not what causes wind drift. What causes wind drift is drag. Drag makes the bullet turn into the wind, keeping the centre of air pressure on its nose. This causes the nose to be cocked (from your perspective) into the wind, the base is cocked (from your perspective) "downwind." So, (again from your perspective), the drag is pushing the bullet downwind making bullets follow the wind. A somewhat less obvious effect is caused by head or tailwinds. A headwind will slightly increase the relative velocity of the projectile, and increase drag and the corresponding drop. A tailwind will reduce the drag and the bullet drop. In the real world pure head or tailwinds are rare, since wind seldom is constant in force and direction and normally interacts with the terrain it is blowing over. This often makes ultra long range shooting in head or tailwind conditions difficult.

Oh by the way the 8 groove barrel shot the 1245 out of 1250.
And no it was not a calm day. The wind flags were 30 degrees off the flag post.

I have shot a 241 and backed it up with a 230's score on a Coors style 250 score target at 200yds. with my .338 Douglas barrel. How does that stack up?

Ken, 7 groove barrels are a whole nother story. You see, the number seven is considered a "lucky" number.  Grin  Lips Sealed

No wonder all my shots are goin in the same hole, it seems that no matter what I do with this "lucky" 7 groove,  the bullets go in the same hole. It's getting very boring shooting this 7 groover,  can any of you guys help me make this shooting game a little more changeling, is there a way I can add another groove, or would it be easer for me to take a groove out.
