I just received a stevens rifle back from John this last week, so have a new .22 to play with.  Got to try it today, and it sure looks like a keeper.

This was with bulk pack walmart ammo, slight (3mph or so) intermittent breeze from 5:00 to 7:00.   

John did a great job of putting together this rifle, converting a spare breechblock to .22 rf and fitting it to the action, making two spare levers, and installing two extra barrels.  If I can bear to part with it this winter when the range is a few feet deep in snow, I'd like to get another barrel in .25-20 fit to it also.   

I really noticed today that the original stock with swiss buttplate is not very good for bench work.  I'll have to cut a new one when I get a chance, and add about an inch to the comb height and fit a cheekpiece to locate my eye the same for each shot.  And, although the barrel is as heavy as will fit on the Stevens 44 frame without being bigger than the receiver, it is very sensitive to where the barrel is rested.  Moving it 4 inches on the sandbag makes almost 4 inches vertical difference  and 1 inch horizontal in point of impact, and opens the groups out by over an inch.

I need to order some better quality ammo to feed it now!

   It's amazing to shoot a group like that with junk plinking ammo. 
I wonder what it will do with good match ammo. I assume that you shot that target at 100 yds. being it's a 100 yd target. Please do let us know the spec on the barrel.

I did leave out most of the details.  The rifle is a stevens #45 on a 44 frame.  It has double sets, but this was shot with the single trigger, which could use some considerable lightnening and smoothing.  Another winter project.

The barrel is a douglas air gage 16 twist rimfire, that I had in my barrel pile and sent off to CPA to contour to half oct/half round, as heavy as would fit the 44 frame.  Sighting is with a 10x Unertl Ultra Varmit, for which Steve Earle provided the blocks.  John Taylor put it all together.   

The target is shot at 100 yards, with what I jokingly call my poor mans bench rest:  a foot square by 6 inch thick chunk of styrofoam out of a light fixture package and a 6 x 10 inch sandbag set on top to rest the barrel on.  I have a small, thin sandbag maybe 1 inch thick and 4 x 6 inches that I hold under the butt and squeeze with my left hand to adjust and hold elevation.

This was the second smallest group out of about 30 rounds I fired, I had another that was on my sight in target that would have held the 25 easily.  That target had about 25 holes in it from moving the scope towards center, so it wouldn't photograph as well.

I have an offhand barrel for this one also, it is a shilen match grade that is longer but lighter.  Both were chambered with a PTG match reamer.  That, in retrospect, might have been a mistake.  I ordered it and had it shipped to John, and PTG didn't send the bushing pilot reamer that I ordered, but instead sent a fixed pilot that cuts a chamber that is fairly loose, a cartridge just drops right in.  If I was to do it again, I would have it chambered with my Manson match reamer, it engages about 1/8 inch in the rifling.  But, the targets look okay so far.  I'll see what it does with wolf and with the Ely that the chamber is designed for.
