Stevens Model 53

So, what can you tell me about a (the) Stevens Model 53 SN# 4505 refered to in Grant's More Single-Shot Rifles on page 37.  My uncle acquired it in 1948.  After his passing in 2005, it has become a highly prized part of my collection.  Have any other Stevens marked '53' come to light in the past 60 plus years?

I don't have Grants book - yet. Tried to find it in the many Stevens Catalog reprints I have. No luck. I finaly found it in Jay Kimmel's book, Savage & Stevens Arms, Collector's History, page17. It describes the No. 53 Schuetzen Rifle with Palm Rest. Half Octagon Barrel, Case-hardened Embossed frame, extra fancy Swisss Pattern Stock, full checked, with cheek piece, large pattern Nickel-plated Swiss Butt, Double Set Triger, G Sights, with Adjustable Palm Rest. This rifle is the same as No 51, but with Adjustable Palm Rest. 30" barrel weighed 13 lbs and cost $63. 32" barrel weighed 14 lbs and cost $65.
Hope this helps. There has to be more than one left but I have never seen one myself that I am aware of. Sure would like to get one for $65 today! This is one of those guns that you keep forever and pass down through the family if at all possible. Me and the rest of the Stevens collectors here would like to see pictures of this one if possible.

Slumlord, thanks. for the info from Kimmel's book.  I'm familiar with Grant's and Saterlee's volumes on the subject but not Kimmel.  My uncle purchased the rifle from Walter Burke Jr. of Stamford Conneticut who, in his letter to my uncle states "I have corresponded with Jas J Grant author of "Single Shot Rifles" on this specimen, and while he had never seen one, he agreed that it is a No 53."  He goes on to mention that he obrained the rifle from the Wilson collection "a few years ago".  Is anyone familiar with either of these two individuals?.  That's what I know so far.  By the way, $65 is a little low,  my uncle paid $90 for it!

The Coors Collection on display at the Cody Museum includes serial #4073 with complete Pope Hartford outfit, barrel #96.

I'd be hard put to choose between it, the high grade Browning single shot or the Schoyen Maynard 16!
