I know of no dealers in Knoxville everybody who shoots here buys in bulk and ships it in. The dealers tell me that Firemarshall restrections keep them from carrying it.

                                      I see you are new to these parts, and I'm glad to make your acquaintance.  Yes the haz. mat. fee is a bit of a price "add on", but my experience has been that most gun clubs and membership organizations buy black powder for their members, and thereby spread the haz mat fees between the members who order powder.

      Are you familiar with the N-SSA (North-South Skirmish Association) ?  If you have contacts in your area who shoot with N-SSA, they shoot a great deal of Goex and/or Swiss and most of those teams go together to buy powder for their shooters.

      You mentioned two cities, Knoxville and Nashville; but they are a distance apart.  So, I don't at this point know exactly where you lie between them.  Two thoughts - - - first, get in touch with the Goex factory representative who handles sales.  His name is Bill Bagwell, and you can reach Bill by phone at 903-938-0905 (Louisiana).  Ask Bill for the name/s of the Goex distributors who may be located in or near your geographical area.  Then from that information, contact those distributors and inquire with them who are the retailers of Goex powder nearest to your home location.

Second, I would suggest that you consider making a trip over to west Tennessee to visit the Dixie Gun Works retail facility.  We know they carry and sell Black Powder at retail, but again, it depends just how far you are willing to drive in order to make a retail purchase - - - the question being will the consumption of gasoline off set the $22.50 has mat surcharge.

Just an after thought, many state and local jurisdictions have in place restrictions as to how much Black Powder made be stored without having to first apply for and obtain a special license from the fire marshal or other regulatory agency.

Thanks for the great info.  I received the rolling block from Cabelas and it looks very much like the one Merle posted sans the long range sights.  I dropped it off at the smith's yesterday for some much needed trigger work.  The trigger reminded me of an AMT Back Up I had the misfortune of shooting years ago.   

I only shot about ten rounds through the gun since I was at the range with my nine year old son for him to get some trigger time on his 22.  He didn't want to wait around for Dad and I don't want to discourage him by boring him.

I was shooting 405 gr cast Mt Baldy bullets lubed with spg.  They were smokeless loads I had loaded for another gun.  I have ordered some 520 gr cast bullts from Mt Baldy to play with.  Casting is in my future too but I can only take so much enjoyment at once.

I had trouble with the buckhorn sights on the gun.  I shoot several guns with ghost rings and other peep sights without a problem.  I wasn't having any problem with my son's CZ 452 stock sights either so I am not sure what is up with that.  I am looking at the Lee Shaver and MVA sights and one or the other will be in the near future.

I am new to black powder so I am just getting set up.  I have a compression die on order and I am looking at wads now.

I am a member of the Oak Ridge club so I will check that out for powder.  Actually I live just up the hill from the club.  I am in Nashville often, mostly for Southwest flights, so that is why I included it.

I know this is a really old topic But for what it's worth Outdoor World in Nashville carries black powder. You have to ask for it by name...I picked up a couple of cans of Goex ffg around two months ago there.Hope this helps someone in search of the Holy Black. It's around $22.00 a lb. but it's local.

I usually purchase from the Maine Powder House. You can mix and match and a 25# order gets you no Hazmat and free shipping. Of course, they are buried in the price, but they give good service.
