Octagon Barrel Question

Is there any benefit to having a Full Octagon over a  Half Octagon Barrel.

From a mechanical standpoint, a full round barrel will be stiffer in the same length, but you won't have the "cool factor" that a half round or full octagon barrel will have!  Also, the round barrel will have less potential for stresses in the barrel.

So there's no real advantage to the octagons, and they may be a disadvantage because there's more potential for stress.  I agree they do have a "cool factor" but if it's just an aesthetics looking thing I guess I'll just save the extra money they cost and go for a round barrel. 

I've seen so many octagon and half octagon barrels that I thought for sure there must be some kind of accuracy advantage. I guess I would sooner have a barrel that has the potential to be more accurate than a barrel with the "cool factor".

I agree with David. I like nice looking guns as much as guns that shoot well, so most of mine are full octagon, or half octagon.
That said, I had John Taylor put a full round GM barrel on my Rolling Block Sporter, and I kinda like the look of a full round that's large enough to fill the front of the receiver. 
But then the one John just finished for me is a half octagon, as I wanted one of each on the #1 Rolling Block action.

I hear what your saying, and I like the look of full octagon barrels and nice wood, but I will be shooting this for bench rest accuracy so need all the help I can get, if the  potential is there for more stress because I spent more money for an octagon barrel and it may not shoot as good as a round barrel, well I don't think I'm gona do that. I'm just not into spending more money so I can end up with a pretty gun that may have less accuracy. 

Being that I see so many octagon barrel target rifles I though for sure that it must be because for some reason they were more accurate

As to the "ugly rifle" comment,  an old timer once told me that if your shooting in a match with the intent of trying to win or at least come in one of the top three positions don't worry about how pretty your gun is because when it's all done and over and the scores are printed out there's no place on the results sheet for comments such as Frank W. came in second with a pretty rifle. I guess it comes down to whether your a competitor or just a participant.

For the same weight  / volume of steel, the octagon is stiffer than the round barrel. You can imagine creating the octagon from a round section by moving some steel outwards and some inwards. The stiffness is proprtional to the distace fron the neutral axis, hence you gain more stiffness from the bit you "push out" than you lose from the bit you push in.
In engineering terms, the stiffness is a function of the second moment of area of the section. For the same cross sectional area, the octagon has a bigger second moment of area than the round section.
