shooting off a rest

i have a martini mark 5. i am using a pappas rest i use for b/r shooting .  as you know a b/r rest is very different from a standard rest.

i purchased a sinclair rest and had james modify it to fit his rest.  the rest came with a bag that uses small bag and puts a squeese on the forend.

i cannot for the life of me keep my rifle straight due to the curvature of the martini stock. i am cossidering having a b/r forend made for it.

can some of you long time shooters help me out.

thanks

bob

For benchrest shooting; my rifle's forearms (including my Martini MK II) have been converted to 2 1/2 inch wide flat bottom forearms that fit my Bald Eagle benchrest sandbag (that is 2 1/2 inches across with a flat top and two 90 degree ears). If the forearm is wide enough and flat; it will not rotate in the sandbag from the recoil or from slight pressure from the shooter. Also when I change the forearm I put on a hanger to free float the barrel at the same time.

Oh come on!

Stick a spirit level on it. If you're using a scope use the crosshairs to keep it the same shot after shot. You can do it. You just need more practice. I shoot my original old target rifles off the round barrels and dont have any trouble.

Oh, wait a minute,,,,,,,,, you just need an excuse to make a fancy forestock. In that case let me know if you need some wood.  Wink

KOwtz, I am not familiar with the Mark 5, but if it is like the Mark 2,and Mark 3,it has a accessory rail that I make an adapter of Delrin. It is flat on the bottom and wider than the forearm with rounded corners. It is made to use the rail screws and adjustable. It's not pretty, but functional. I have also used polished aluminum on a few. 45/70SS

you can  make a wood adapter to fit the accessory rail. Also someone makes a adapter that is u-shaped and attaches to a sling swivel or accessory rail. I would look on Bench rest central.

Hart makes the one that attaches to a sling swivel, I use one on my Ruger # 1 and it makes a big difference in the way it groups.

Forgot to say that even though it's a big help in shooting small groups, be careful if you try an use it in a shoot as it's not legal for ASSRA bench rest shooting.

This thread is a weird one. Maybe thats why I keep reading it over and over. A Martini Mark 5 rifle is a single shot military rifle. Then I looked up the Pappas rest.

Buying a Sinclair rest then using part of it on the Pappas rest makes absolutely no sense to me.

Is your Mark 5 a full blown benchrest rifle? How does the buttstock fit the Pappas rest?

Why dont you use the Sinclair rest and a small bunny ear bag for the rear? That setup has proven to work very very well for many years now.

I "heard" this one as referring to an International Mk V.  Since these rifles were factory equipped with a forend accessory rail, it would be an easy job to fit a flat bottomed plate no wider than the rules allowed to the rail, and use a bag to match.

Yeah, I've gotten "bit" by companies recycling product names or numbers, or using very similar ones, to denote very different items!   Roll Eyes  Not much we, as consumers, can do about it, though.

boys thanks for the replies and info much appreciated. a couple will be contacted privately to get more ideas how to deal with this.

my rifle is perfectly legal for ara whcih really has no rules that i know of except railguns are nto permitted.

unless you own one of these fine rifles it is very difficult to explain what is going on.

the pappas rest is an unbelievable piece of equipment but it is not made for a martini type rifle thus the extra work involved to get it to work..

i also own 4 b/r rifles which present no problems but i am trying to get as proficient as i can with the martinis.

make sense i hope so

thanks

in reply to one person. the pappas rest is the finest rest i have seen.  james makes this as a windage rest. no bag moving you can shoot straigth across by moving a big knob or straight up and down using another knob. the bulls are 5 accross and 5 down.

to you that dont understand go to a b/r shoot some time you will be amazed at what you see.  these guys can just plain shoot no question about it. some of them shooting ammo that costs 25.00 a box!!

i shoot in my backyard for fun and relaxation but its like golf completely aggravating at times but not as much work. expensive yes.

thanks for all the comments and i got good info and simple stuff. i did need the sinclair rest to make this work and now am very close to resolving my problem with my martinis i want to get one to shoot so i can go to one of the meets and compete. but not yet.

i think they have a vintage shoot in st. louis and it is always packed by us vintage shooters.
