.22 ammunition

OK guys, I know this is a very knowledgable group so somebody give me a heads up with an idea or a contact. I'm not really an ammo collector but i have one box of rare ammo I came by and really do not know who deals in this stuff.  It's a full box of .22 blackpowder shorts circa 1889. copper cases, pristine box. I know it's highly collectable but acurate value, ????? I do want to sell it.

The ammo collectors will want to see a photo of the box, since condition and brand adds (or detracts) from the value.

My bad, it's in the green over tan Winchester box that I would call pristine, no bumps, tears, stains, or fading. It's about as nice a 19'th century ammo box as I've seen.

I'm interested in the history & marketing of 22 Shorts for Schuetzen use, especially in the pre-1920s.  How do you know the box of Shorts is circa 1889?  Does the box say anything about target use?  What do the bullets look like?  any wadcutter edges?  Or just ordinary round noses?

Richard,
The shorts box has no target reference whatsoever. The dating is, to my mind, pretty accurate for two reasons. First, the ammo came with a fair amount of pvonance associated with a very rare custom ordered Colt Lightening probably a one-off. It also has a red number stamped on the end which I've been told seems accurate for date.
Standard appearing round nose, never heard of wad cutters that early, but as stated not really an ammo guy.

Richard,

You peaked my curiosity, so I went out into my garage and found a couple of old boxes of Peters 22 Shorts, each is full and are marked non-corrosive priming, semi-smokeless powder. On the back they are marked “These cartridges, specially manufactured for shooting gallery use.”  The boxes are red, green and yellow, the cartridges appear to be copper with round nose bullets. I would guess that they date back to the 1920’s?

You know I should shut up and check everything first, My bad.. The green box has a  label:   50 short No.22
                                   Rifle Cartridges              Stevens
                                    Winchester                  Patent
Repeating Arms Co        Oct, 31 1871
                               New Haven, Conn   U.S.A
 The side has:
                                  50 .22 cal short
                                  target cartridges
                                  winchester make

Typing in the office while box is home is not too bright, I guess.

tim_s,
The patent date has nothing to do with the year Mfg.
Send a picture of the box and I'll get it to a friend of mine that is writing a book on 22 Ammo. He will be able to give it a date that Winchester started using that type of box and a date they stopped using it.
