Is there a easy way to tell a Stevens 44 from a 441/2  by looking at the sides of the action? I see the 44 has two action screw heads on the right side of the action and the 44 1/2 does not . Does  this always hold true?  Any better ways?               THANKS  FOR ANY ADVISE  JB

JB,
Quickest way for me to tell is to ignore the screws and turn the action lever up. If it's a 44 1/2 you will see (just behind the lever pivot) the two lower projections of the breechblock straddling both sides of the lever. If it's a 44, all you will see is lever and frame.

If it is missing the action screw it is definately a 44 1/2. It is, however, my understanding that some 44 1/2's did have the extra screw. I haven't seen one YET. Looking at the bottom of the action will definately tell you what you have.

You can steal from the Winchester collectors and consider the 44 to be a "low wall", and the 44 1/2 as a "high wall". This picture shows a 44 at the top and 44 1/2 on the bottom. After looking at Stevens rifles for awhile your eye will pick up on the differences in contour, etc. of the two actions.

Thanks for the picture, it,s a big help.I notice the breech block has a different  shape too. When searching GUN BROKER sometimes all you can see is sides of the action.     THANKS  JB

My 44.5 has two screws. I have also read that the 44.5s made in .22 cal had a second screw that had something to do with extraction/ejection.

However, mine started life as a 25-20ss. But it has the second screw.
