Front sight insert question (Read 2408 times)

	I ran into a situation today and I'd appreciate some advice from the experts. I'm using a hooded front sight with a cross hair insert and an tang sight. I'm shooting silhouette chickens off-hand at 200 yards and I'm having difficulty seeing the cross hairs against the dark embankment. I've tried using the lollipop insert but I don't do as well as with the cross hair insert. Does any one have any suggestions on how to provide come contrast so the cross hairs don't disappear against the dark embankment? Thanks

	Use "white out" to paint your insert.

	Campbell's book on the Winchester Single Shot and perhaps other sources show a globe front sight that has had a sort of "skylight" cut into it to allow more light to enter. This, along with judicious color choice for the cross hairs, lollypop, etc. ought to help. Froggie

	Most people will shoot Chickens better with the largest aperture. Cross hair looks precise but it's not as precise as an aperture. Eye centers the sight on mass. Chickens are almost round so direction they face makes little difference. Rams due to the Head and Horn require different windage adjustment according to how they are turned left or right. Told this years ago did not believe it but ran a series of test bench rest with my 10 meter airgun aperture sights on the official NRA air gun silhouette target. Aperture beat any other front sight insert group size every time. The bias toward the head on Rams was measurable my rule of thumb is 1 moa. Other critters no measurable difference depending on the way they were turned. Boats
