Do any of you folks live near Scranton Pennsylvania? I’ve been researching the Electric City Rifle Club that once held gallery matches in Scranton and I’m curious if there are any schuetzen matches still held in the Scranton area.

Bob,
I was born and raised in Scranton, PA and also shot with the Scranton Club from the mid 1950's to the late 1960's, then moved out of the area.

  As far as I know the club is still in operation as the Scranton Rifle & Pistol Club. I don't know what there program's are now but at the time I was a member they had both indoor and outdoor ranges and shot both 22 Rim fire and Center fire events with both Rifle and Handgun. Some of the family names in the photo seem familiar to me, do you know what year it was taken.

ST,

I would guess that the picture was taken in 1905, but it could be earlier, we have more information on our website;

PS I called the Lackawanna Historical Society in Scranton because, if you notice above the table in the picture, there is a gas lighting fixture which I thought was a bit odd for "Electric City." They told me that there was a coal fired DC generating plant in Scranton which powered a light rail system around town, and that's why it was Electric City.

DonN,
The old Electric City Club back then was just about in the center of town, of course that would never work today. There new range is about 10 or so miles north of town. Like I've said I know for sure that they are still shooting but do not know what there program's are. If your west of Scranton you probably know of the Wilkes-Barre Rifle and Pistol Club, just south of Scranton. It was started in the early 1920's or maybe earlier, It also was just about in the center of town and of course had to be moved. The last I heard they had about 40 covered Rifle points out to 200 yds., I shot there a lot in the 60's and 70's, again, don't know what there program's are now. I don't think any of these clubs are "secret" just ask around at some of the gun shops in the area, they will be able to tell you more about them. If you live only 40 miles west of Scranton and don't know about these old clubs you need to get out more.   Wink

Sorry when I said matches I ment Schutzen matches. I'm in Williamsport and there are plenty of clubs around just no Schutzen matches. The closes is in upstate NY a little to far for me to drive.
In fact I think I'm the only guy who shoots a S/S rifle within fifty miles

Don,
Like I've said, I don't know what kind of programs or matches they shoot but I know how you feel, there's no one around me that shoots SS's either. In the next week or two I'm going to try an find out just what they shoot as I'll be visiting some friends in Scranton.

  From what I've heard there is a large Rifle club in the Williamsport area that shoot out to 1000 yds. would like to give that a try, have you ever shot there.

That's the Williamsport 1000 yd Club. They shoot at Bodines I've never been there, but shoot at CSLC with a fella who does shoot 1000 yds. His rifles are works of machincal art. He  shoot a light rifle and it only weighs about 20 lb. or so  Shocked  I think the record for a 10 rd group is 3.5 inches. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
