Lyman 55 modification (Read 5213 times)

	Has any one seen or heard of a modification to the Lyman 55 powder measure that has an extra reservoir and cavity for a priming charge? The main charger would be for Black powder.

	The old cast iron #6 was like that, of course, but the casting for it was different from the #5. I have heard of a modification done on the current design #55, but I have never even seen a picture of how it works. I would be interested in finding out more about it myself. I don't suppose you are confusing the #5 micrometer-type conversion (by Culver, et al) instead of a 2 chamber conversion? Froggie

	I posed the question for a friend who had heard of such a critter. It sounds like maybe you both are refering to the same thing. He had a #55 with him and the casting sure didn't look like it would be an easy or practicle modification. The large chamber takes up a lot of room in the rotating drum not leaving much space for the prime charge cavity.

	I think it [u]could[u] be done with a lot of engineering and machining, but the process would probably be more difficult than starting from scratch. The casting, as you saw, doesn't lend itself to that kind of modification as best I can determine. Your friend might want to look at Kelver's and Chamberlain's books on old reloading tools for ideas to build a better mousetrap (or powder measure! ) HTH ~ Froggie

	It's much simpler to just buy a Little Dandy, or the little Pacific pistol powder measures and just throw a charge of smokeless in each case before loading your BP. I use both of these measures with their preset rotors and they're prefect for duplex loads with any good measure for the main charge.

	Just noticed this thread, Here,s what I did, I took the shot and powder measures off an old Bair shot gun loader and threaded the outlet for a drop tube ,then I made bushings the right size for the charges I wanted. push one way you get priming charge the other way you get the main charge down the drop tube realy works great> hope this helps ----Turk

	I used to just use two Lyman 55's. Since then I've found an Ideal #6 but seldom duplex.

	I've also seen where a shooter mounted a pair of conventional Lymans next to each other, one set for his smokeless undercharge and one set for his BP load. A little "spacey" but works. Just be careful you remember which is which. One very experienced shooter , forgot in the heat of competition and grenaded an RB and parts of his body. Dick
