A few questions about 22 mathes?

I have very little knowledge of shooting rifle compition! So I hope that you guys will help me out! on a 22 match only where you don't have to shoot all targets standing up!
I have a Haehel KK Sporter, will this rifle be allowed to be used?
I have a Sharps with a 22 liner, is that a legal rifle?
When shooting off sticks, are there targets that you have to shoot in the prone position, if there are will they make exceptions for a dis abeled shooters, I don't think I can shoot prone?
I went and read the rules but my questions I ask are in the grey area! They mention a period correct rifle and that is why I ask about the Haenel Sporter, because they build the Aydt, which has very close working?
I most likely will never get to go to a match, but I have realy become fond of shooting long range with the 22's!
I will be most great full for any and all advice!
Thanks ACE

Ace,
Is Joplin, MO Pistol and Rifle Club still going?  15 or 20 years ago they shot a lot of .22 matches and had quite a range of steel livestock to plink at.  There would be a lot of folks close, that could be helpful as well.  I never shot over there, but we went to their range and looked it over years ago.  I couldn't find it without a map anymore, all I remember is it was south west of town near Shale Creek.  Let me know if they are shooting, I would like to try my bolt gun, I could try to meet you then.

The Old Fort Sharpshooters Club range up at Fort Scott, KS has a really nice 100 yard range.  Covered firing line, 10 benches or so and membership furnishes targets (what a deal).   My dad runs the range over there a lot of days a month, retirement must be nice.  I don't know if they have any specific .22 matches, but they do have some singleshot shooters and do put on some other specialty shoots for fun about every month.

Twice a year the Chetopa Creek Gun Club west of Thayer, KS has a BPCR shoot on Sunday after their Rendy, I have never stayed for that, my fingers are tired by late Saturday night and I have not camped there, so there is no reason to go back on Sunday.  I even chickened out due to rain this spring, never even went down.  They will generally be as accomodating a group of folks as you will find.

I am watching, hoping someone will pipe up that they have a shoot around our end of the world somewhere!  South East Kansas, Western Missouri? I thought maybe there was something at Hutchinson or other areas around Wichita.  It would be just wrong in so many ways to not have some shoots in Kansas!

Kevin,
I have heard of the Joplin Club, but never been there, but I will do some calling this week, and see if they have any matches! I know they are still open, because I have heard people talk about it!
I would like to get 10-15 guys wanting to shoot, I would see if my shooting pard would hold a shoot at his place! He has a AWESOME range for just his shooting! he has the Ram at 325 or 365 yards!
Kevin, pm me and let me know how close you live to me! I spend a lot of my time over on the Cas City leather Forum, but i do go down to the Brown forum, and I am so stupid, I never read the first post that was a sticky, It said anyone interested in a spring Buffalo Hunt, since I used to Big Game hunt, went to Northern B.C., and all over the west, i took it as a real hunt, instead of a shoot Roll Eyes I sure would of thried to went to it!
lets try to get toghter!

What kind of .22 matches are you asking about?? If is is .22 Silhouette styled like a BPCR match, there are no official NRA rules. It seems each club like ours will allow some rifles that do not meet the big gun rules, like Martinis. Our club would allow your Haenel but you would have to come to New Mexico. Silhouette allows any position with sticks. If you can't go prone, I don't see sitting or kneeling being any more comfortable.

Thanks Tom for the info! I havn't tried shooting prone since I got hurt, I have L3, L4, L5 disc torn in my back, it might be easier to shoot prone but I don't know? If they have a Fall match here in Kansas like they did in April, the way I under stand is they had several class, 22 & Big Bore, and I want to shoot it if I am able! But there is no way I could shoot my 45-70 prone. I don't know if there are any rifle clubs even close to me.  For me, it would just be fun to go shoot, I will never be a good shooter anymore! You know that it takes lots of practice and concetration to focus and be a good shooter! And when you live in pain 24/7 your concentration factor isn't what is has to be to be able shoot good!
So I just want to go have fun!
thanks for the advice!

Most clubs don't require you to shoot each position. In casual matches you can shoot the ones that your back feels comfortable in, and skip the others.

We shoot .22 BPCR informal matches at the Albuquerque Shooting Range Park. Either the 1st Sunday or 3rd Saturday of each month. Range fee is $6, we don't charge for the match. PM for details.

my local gunclub does an NRA 22 rf all-offhand sillhouette match in conjunction with a number of other area gunclubs.  I went a couple times.  they allowed my Martini which has a crescent style buttplate and they allowed my original Swiss Federal Martini which has a very modest minimal hook buttplate--but it was a tolerated/allowed deal  I'm sure if I'd won anything there'd have been protests.  My ruger #1 conversion with a full heavy lower buttplate was flat out not allowed.  Apparently the NRA rules have something about buttplates---probably to prevent someone showing up with a full international style offhand target rifle.

most of the guys were shooting tricked out 10-22s anyway.

At the ASSRA matches (at Etna green at least)  We shot a mixture of 22 matches---both bench and offhand.  the Spring and Fall 22 rf only shoots are done at both 200 and 100 yards and there are a pretty full range of matches.  at the main Spring Summer and Fall maches there is a limited amount of 22 shooting to be done, a single entry 10-shot 200 yard bench match, the 100-shot, 100-yard "mini-hudson" and 2 50 yard offhand unlimited entry matches.

I'm not sure about the Haenel KK rifle since Haenal has made a bunch of guns over the years including the great german schuetzen match rifles.  IF it is a non-bolt action single shot it'd probably be allowable. the sharps with a liner would be perfectly ok as would any other big-bore BCPR type rifle with a liner.  but  that's just my opinion--I'm no schuetzenmeister and local interpretation of rules might vary.

DWS8130,
My Haenel, is a falling block. I have a friend of my that bought one of those Small Sharps rifle that Lee Shaver made the parts and the guy in Dodge city put them toghter and did the wood work! They are very beautifull, but I didn't have $2500.00 to buy one! He is a real good shot and takes his shooting very serious! He ordered some Semi Hi Dollar Winchester 22's, 5000 of them cost him $350.00, I shoot the Winchester $13.68 a brick. We were out shooting the other eve, we were shooting at the ram at 325 yards. As we were shooting, I told him to shoot some of mine, he said okay, he was hitting the same spot on the ram as he was with his twice as high ammo. I can't believe that there are 22's ammo that is like $10.00 for a box of 50 or higher!
I most likely will never get to a match, but I wanted to kind of have a idea of what to expect!
Thanks ACE

Ace, the major difference between the high priced spread and the lesser cost ammo is consistency...bullet weight & shape, case weight, priming and powder, plus also crimp.  I've had boxes of cheap ammo that shot very well, but the next box of the same brand/type couldn't group in a dinner plate at fifty yards.  One thing I've done when getting ready for a match and all I have is the low to mid priced ammo is to weigh the cartridge and sort by weight and rim thickness.  Many fewer unexplained fliers!   Roll Eyes  We won't talk about those bad shots from poor wind doping or trigger jerking!   Lips Sealed  Cry

38 cal,
Thank you for explaining that to me, kinda like when reloading for plinking useing your Dillon, or when you are counting on the money shot and tou are scaling every powder charge and making they perfect! I just didn't figure that anything mass produced could have that much better quality control !
Thanks again!

Yeah the big $$$ stuff is ALL about consistency round to round, box to box case to case (within case lots)

something so simple as a 22 long rifle round----YEAH SURE!!!!!!!

Sometimes you'll find a specific lot/batch of a brand that is gilt edges with one rifle----but won't shoot worth squat in another similar rifle of same make and model.  I've even heard of sequentially numbered rifles that did their best with different ammo.

Then there are the ones that shoot little bitty groups at one range and then spray them at a different range---with the same ammo.

Generally speaking the higher priced ones are  mathmaticaly more consistent---at least in the Mfgr's shooting laboratories---at the ranges they test at.
There is/was an interesting book on testing and evaluation of 22 rf ammo-----but the data presented was oriented to the 50yd benchrest game.    Apply it to our game--bench or offhand in single shots at 200 or 100 yards (50 offhand) and the data was just--interesting.

About all you can do is test and evaluate as many different versions as your wallet can stand---then when you find one that works in YOUR rifle you buy as much of that batch/lot as you can possible justify,  'caues who knows when the mfg will change the lots---or discontinue that product Cry

22's are weird stuff--and SO MUCH FRUSTRATING FUN!!
