Really, Really RARE rollingblock GEMMER

This is the elusive Far East model with Appalachian American furniture. Very, very few of these were made. Gemmer was proud of this model as evidenced by the special features bestowed on it by his team. Caliber is 50-70, and is just right for traipsing around the ridges in search of squacks, and cottontails. I tell you, I am right proud of this one. Words to describe it really elude me at this time!!! Perhaps some of you kinder Gentlemen can help. Later, moodyholler

It appears to be a RRB 1 1/2 generally considered a lighter or sporting version of the military rifle.  The 50/70 caliber seems a bit big for the Rem 1 1/2 SO I'm probably wrong.   leadball

moodyholler,
What is the thickness of your receiver? The 1 1/2's I've had didn't exceeded 1 3/16" in width, and were usually about 0.015" under that.

Is there any Gemmer marks on it? I ask because in the course of studying JP Gemmer's work for buildiing Gemmer styled trapdoors, I naturally looked at the Sharps, Spencers, and Rolling Blocks. This one has none of the "traditional"  style features I'm used to seeing in them. The barrel should be stamped "JP Gemmer-St. Louis" or just "Gemmer-St. Louis." In keeping with the styling of a Hawken rifle all that I have observed have had a beaver tail cheek piece, a Hawken fore-end with a steel or pewter bose cap and Hawken barrel key with escutchen. Most, but not all had a ramrod added. Yours is so very different, not to say that Gemmer didn't re-manufacture it as the builders did a lot of one-off for customers, that I am interested, from an historical aspect. I look forward to seeing and hearing more.

Me thinks Moodyholler is pulling our legs! Grin
As to whether it's a #1 or #1 1/2, the #1 has a longer lower tang in a civilian action of octagon top, while the #1 1/2 has the same length top and bottom tangs. As mentioned, the 1 1/2 is also thinner.
Additionally, the #1 sporter has two screws on the lower tang that enter from each side, while the #1 1/2 has but one through screw that enters from left to right. The two screw setup was to accomodate set triggers on the #1, while the #1 1/2 didn't have this option.
Since Moodyholler's action shows a screw head on the right side rear tang position, it should be  A #1 Sporter.-Vall

Vall, I guess I am busted. It is a #1 sporter and the hammer is cut for a fly. It has no marking TD and I am truly sorry for pulling your leg. I thought it was funny. It is a really ugly old gun that someone put a lot of effort into. I am pulling it apart to make myself a sporter from. Thanks, moodyholler

Had me really interested. Being primarily a TD man, the only real knowledge I have, other than having a Navy Arms 45-70 RB YEARS ago, is my study of the whole Gemmer series. So if'n  he had you guys goin' for a while, imagine how hooked he had me.  Embarrassed

Considering the cool factor of a Rem. Sporter action, a restoration is definitely a great idea! And since you've got a good start, the cost shouldn't be too bad either.
I just finished this one, and it started from just a receiver that a friend sold me.

I do believe it is. Vall doesn't do anything half-way. Them Ballards require extensive work anyway, and supplies usually run low midstream. I once had a ballard, but no one knew as it stayed broken in the closet. Traded it for Raven .25 auto. Knida feel sorry for that fellow. Later, Moodyholler

I kind of liked the description but couldn't see the details.  Grin

I do like a good 50-70 however.

Yep! And no, it wasn't what was used to get that barrel blued, but it does get a lot of use! The barrel was rust blued in about 11 steps of bluing, rusting, and carding off. The action was cased by Al Springer, and the wood was semi carved by Dave Crossno, and I fitted, finished, and installed the skeletonized buttplate. An that is a Wipe-On Poly finish. I really love WOP, as it gives a finish like Permalyn Sealer, but costs less, and is easier to buy.

And this one is the start of my next Roller project. A #1 Sporter converted to .22LR, but the barrel is only 20", with a 4" bloop tube. It's getting a 10" bloop tube to give more sighting radius, and balance more to my liking. John Taylor will be fixing the barrel up for me.
