Course of fire is 15 shots for record each day at 1000, 900 and 800 yards.  You are allowed 3 sighting shots at each range each day, the first sighter being your first shot that hits paper. Figure at least 5 sighters per each 15 shot relay or 20 shots per distance per day. That works out to 120 shots minimum. More is better. If you are new at it and don't have sight settings it would be good to quite a few more. 150 would be more than enough to cover any eventuality

If you don't have long range sight settings bring what settings you have and someone will help estimate the required settings and help you get on paper.

What bullet weight are you shooting? Do you know the velocity?
There is a mininum bullet weight and velocity restriction, but most any reasonable load in a .45-70 will comply.

With your load information and your 100 and 200 yard settings, a reasonable guess can be made at the 1k sight setting. At the begining of the relay you are allowed two minutes "for ranging and fouling shots". Basically you are shooting at the sand backstop and you can see the impacts throught the scope. You will have a spotter looking through a scope to aid you. If you have trouble finding the impact the spotters along side you will likely help in between working with their shooters. After the two minutes are up the targets come up and the match starts, but you can still shoot to try to find your point of impact if you are still lost. You only get three sighting shots, but the first official sighting shot is the first one that hits paper.  You can shoot as many as you need to find the paper without penalty. But really, it is not that difficult.

By all means come out and give it a go. It is a friendly environment and while it seems impossible, the targets are indeed hittable at 1K. If nothing else come out have have  look at what is going on.  You can register on the morning of the match if you want.
