Hi All !!!

Old photo (circa 1872) showing what I think is a “Big Fifty” with the results of having done its work.. Those with sharper eyes can tell me if it’s a full stock Military or a Commercial…

I can't really tell from the photo, it is pretty grainy. I think that is a photograph by frontier photographer L.A. Huffman, and it may be his Sharps. I recall seeing a picture like it some time ago. Huffman worked his trade in the Fort Keough area (Miles City, MT) and there are alot of photos of Buffalo hunters, sod busters, to cowboy and ranch life. I'd have to find my Huffman book first. It does look like a military stock, probably a 45-70.

That particular Sharps is a sporting rifle. I have seen photo that is clearer than the one posted. If you study the photo a little, you might be able to make out the two forestack screws and escutcheons, the schnabble forestock end, octagon barrel, and bore wiping stick protruding from the muzzle. That was common way to carry a means for barrel cleaning back in the commercial buffalo hunting era.
