Scope power?

After today I'm thinking that my 20X Leupold is just to much for standing, so what power do you use and why?
Is a straight power or a variable the best..? Still learning.
My standing really bet me today.

Your area of wobble on the target is the same whether you are looking through a 20X or 3X scope. To get either to work for you, it takes practice. At a minimum, I suggest you consider a 3-times a week training regimen such as shouldering your rifle, making the cross hairs settle on a target (a piece of paper with a center spot across the garage will suffice) and squeezing the trigger while holding center. Make sure to continue to hold on target after trigger squeeze to ensure follow-through. Do 5 reps of this exercise. This is mostly mental preparation but will notice the difference in your offhand shooting.
I have shot offhand with 20X for years and it's quite manageable. In the interest of full disclosure, last year I switched to a 10X on my Ballard No6 to reduce weight (it's noticeably lighter) but miss the 20X magnification.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Offhand My main Schuetzen has a 20x STS use it for .22 and 32/40 38/55 Schuetzen using 330 bullets and black powder it recoils too much for the 20 and use a 12 Unertl. My rifles are traditional set up and 20 is all I can find The 12 is the primary reason my scores are lower with the 38/55
Modern Silhouette rifles High power and Small bore use the 6.5x20 Leupold's. Now that Leopold has some good fixed power target scopes with higher power I am sure my scores would be better with higher power. For the life of me never could understand why Leopold made there main target scope variable, You don't need anything but the max and variable just adds complication and hinders resolution,
Fellow that wins offhand most of our Schuetzen matches uses a pair of 36 x Jap Weavers offhand There is no good reason to limit you view of the target with low power. Low power does not make you hold the gun any better just hides what it's doing.

there are some offhand shootters at Etna Green that like using a 36 power - but I think that you have to be able to hold pretty steady to do that - but then they are pretty good offhand shots. generally I would think that the steadier that you can hold should equate to higher scores. As sugested earlier I believe that is where the practice pays off. respectfully - the rimfire

Rimfire the school of thought a lot of guys subscribe to is from David Tubb. You can't hold the rifle steady. His method is to shoot approach, settle off the bullseye swing into it and break the shot as it approaches the center. If you think about it that's how you shoot clay targets with a shotgun come up from behind and break the shot as you pass.
His book detailing approach methods is how the higher power scopes came into use, they work fine using the technique. If somebody stood still with a very high power scope trying to hold steady it would be frustrating at best.

I use a 24 power scope and shoot exclusively 22 cal offhand, mostly either 50 feet or 200 yards. One thing that made a big improvement was when I shifted my concentration to the bullseye on the target rather than watching the crosshairs. My eye follows the target, which is not moving, rather than the crosshairs which move all over the place, all the time. When I am shooting well, I am only vaguely aware of the crosshairs.
The sights have a familiar pattern of movement. When I see a different pattern, I try to discipline myself to set the rifle down. The different pattern is a sure warning of a bad shot coming.

I think what I'm going to do is use my 20 for bench and then change to a 12X for standing and just practice a whole lot more.
Thanks for the help van

Boats - thanks for your input - I have never read anything by Tubbs.
I know that he is a great offhand shooter - never to old to learn.

One of our best offhand shooters, Colleen Molendyk uses a 36X scope, so I gave it a try. Actually you cannot hold the scope steady and you actually have to time when the crosshairs move across the bullseye.
A low power scope just shows you are in the area of the large red circle; but for precision offhand shooting you need to zero in on the bulls eye. Once you learn to work with the scope movement you will find you become a better shooter. Or you can ignore the feedback you need to shoot precisely and use a lower magnification.

I got hold of a rifle with a 30x Lyman scope on it
I had asked a proficient OH shooter why such a large powered scope would be used shooting OH.
He explained that if you can keep the Xhairs in the red and it stayed in the bull when the triggers broke you'd end up with a decent score, He said NOBODY holds like a rock.
His explanation made sense.
I shot a feature match OH with that scope shortly after that, mostly to help defray the costs of the medals.
But when it was all over I had shot a 191, that got me my first medal at Beeson range.
I then understood the higher powered scope for offhand.
