Regretfully last year in a financial move I sold my no1 Shiloh sporter.  I got just about what i had into it but I still regret selling it.  Lately Ive had a real hankering to shoot those types of rifles again. However I dont want to spend a minimum of 2k to do it.  I saw a 1874 plain jane new Pedersoli Sharps Hunter at Cabelas for $899. 30 inch barrel and shotgun butt with pistol grip.  I also see used C Sharps 1875 rifles for sale on the internet regularly for about 2-300 more than that.  The gun is going to be used mainly for targets but maybe for hunting once in a while so I wasnt looking for something as fine as my Shiloh was.
My question is this
Ive heard 1875 C sharps are prone to  firing pin breakage. Is this true?
I'm sure accuracy is good with both so I am just asking what is the better deal.
I know Pedersoli's can be loaded to about 28000 cup.
Can C sharps 1875 be loaded to that pressure also?
Any opinions or comments would be appreciated

I've had a C. Sharps 1875 for ~20 years. In that tme I've broken 2 firing pins, both when dry firing. Never broke a firing pin when a case/primer were in the gun.
I like this gun, watched the Shiloh 1874 owners break pins a lot, fiddle and file with them.
The gun seems accurate, averaging under 2" at 100 yards for 5 five-shot groups with individual groups under an inch occasionally. I've shot it to 600 yards and it hasn't let me down yet.
It ain't as pretty as other Sharps, and the case coloring is ugly, but it's my only big gun now and I'm happy.

Ask Shiloh or C Sharps about firing pin breakage. Both will tell you it's part of the nature of a Sharps action. Everyone's Sharps 74 will probably break a firing pin at some time.

one of the first things i tell any one who has any make of sharps rifle, is set the hammer to half cock before opening breech or you will break the firing pin. I have had my piece of shiloh sharps for about 3 years without a problem YET! and hopefully wont.

I shot a '75 Sharps (40/65) for several years. I still have it. It is a FINE rifle. Exceedingly accurate with a VERY nice single trigger. The only quarrel I have with it is it has more drop than I prefer.

I have had absolutely NO mechanical problems with it. Quality is VERY high.

In fact, I much prefer it over the '74 Sharps. I like the faster lock time. The action operates as if it were running on ball bearings.
