1884 Springfield Trap Door

Hope this is not out of order here, but a question on the value of a cut down 1884 Trapdoor. It is in excellent condition with buffington Sight and was appearently done by a very professional gunsmith. The bore looks to have never been fired, that is absolutely perfect, and is the original barrel with arsnal proof marks are > p eagle head 2, although cut to 21 inches. Original buttplate, front band, and trigger guard.
I bought it as a shooter, not collector.  Paid $350.00.
Was that good?

thanks.

I think you did real good! You'll have a lot of fun with it. Too bad the barrel isn't a little longer, but if you want to someday you can re-barrel it with no worries about "destroying a valuable piece of history". More fun to own than an arsenal new piece (which I don't think you can get at that price!)
Look back in some of the older posts on this site. Some guys make beautiful custom guns from these.
I got my start in single shots with one of these sporterized trapdoors; there are probably 1000's of them around. Somebody told me at one time you could buy a brand new trapdoor for something like $2.25!
Wish I still had mine. Cry

I'd pay $350 if it didn't even have a barrel! A nice Trapdoor in good order, with just a barrel stub will get $300 or more.

I can still put one together from parts for that money but it won't look that good and the bore won't be crisp. I say you stole it!!

I love the trapdoors. Enjoy it. If you aren't familiar with how to load up for one of them do a few searches on this sight. Lots of info abounds!!

That being a cutdown barrel it should have a better muzzle than alot of them do. They would get banged up from the cleaning rod. Protect the muzzle and I bet it shoots once you get a load worked up.

Being that short, you will know when it goes off, too!

BTW, I have seen buffington sights at gunshows that guys are asking 250 for. Don't know if they get it or not.

Be sure to slug the bore before loading anything for it! Lots of Trapdoors have big bores and often need bullets in the .460-.461" range.

c.robertson;

My trapdoor is 1873 and a mirror image of yours . 21'' barrel
the serial # is Custer's time or just after. the stock has not been refinished and still has ink prof marks. It shoots OK with .458s
405gr slug ,but could do better with a bigger bullet. It only gets
shot on a good day!! if you know what I mean.

OL_DEUCE,
Do you know if yours is a cut down infantry or calvery rifle? If you notice the front sights, yours looks original, mine is a gunsmithed one dovetailed into a soldered on base. The barrel is cut down as evidenced by the filled in cleaning rod channel in the stock. Over all extremely well done, but a carbine conversion from an infantry rifle non-the-less.

Also, yes, I figgured $250.00 for a Buffington Sight was an over statement. Seen them in the $100.00 range on Ebay and Gunbroker.

I would say 10 dollars to a donut its cut down! I inspected the front of the stalk ant it has a filler wood finished in, It always brings comment
when I take it to the range.
