Once again old leadball has shown that what he thinks is beautiful is based on the "Golden Mean," which is in the single shot rifle, the inimitable Winchester 'wall.  Glad to see he finally admits it, even inadvertently!!    Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Froggie

PS  Hey leadball, wanna buy a nice low-wall action and build a real rifle??

Gentlemens:

Ben nailed it exactly. It is a low wall in a Stevens configuration.

Wasn't there a real weird Stevens-Winchester twist on the original rifle that was the general pattern for this year's Single Shot Classic?

The inspiration for the rifle is a rifle pictured in The Winchester Single Shot on page 147. It’s thought to be a Winchester factory custom job. The original belongs to Gary Quinlan. When this project was conceptionalised I got a hold of Gary who was very helpful, providing photos and information so we could get this right. The original owner was obviously a fan of L.P. Ittle and had his rifle similarly configured. There are a few deviations from the original, the barrel was a Winchester .22 short, we used a RKS Pope style .22 LR barrel and the Pope rear sight on the original is replaced by a Frank Zika Farrow style sight.
The best part about this rifle is that somebody is going to own it for $10.00. I can’t enter but my wife has been telling me lately that she wants a .22 for offhand work.

John, I guess it was the original Ittle rifle I was thinking of that had the interesting story.  As best I recall it was something about forcing Stevens to build a Winchester or viceversa because of a match prize offer

Back in the day, Stevens rebuilt a lot of Winchesters, Ballards and Remingtons at their plant. I've seen a number of "Stevenized" other brands complete with Stevens barrels, stocks, buttplates and even sights. At first glance they have the look of every 44 or 44 1/2, until you notice the receivers.
I've got a good friend who's got a nice Hi Wall which Stevens rebuilt, and the barrel has a different marking than the typical Stevens. If I remember correctly it reads, "Rebarreled by J. Stevens Arms." or something of that sort. It too has the tevens stocks, checkering, and buttplate of the typical 52 Schuetzen.

One of Campbell"s Winchester books has a "print" of a future Win that looks for the world like a 44 1/2 stevens, they were clearly on the right track.   leadball
