Help with Flobert pistol, please.

I have a new-to-me Flobert pistol, and have not been able to find other Flobert-shooters.  Have ordered Joseph Vorisek's book on Flobert Guns through interlibrary loan.

I'm hoping for reference sources for Flobert pistols, or a forum, or part of one, devoted to them.

The pistol barrel is marked "Flobert 6mm" and there is a maker's stamp of an eagle or a falcon. The man from whom I got the pistol said that it's from the 1920's.  It's grand to shoot, and I'd like to know more.

Thanks very much.  I know this is a rifle forum, but there aren't too many around who enjoy shooting singe-shots of any kind.  Hope you don't mind my asking here.

Hello Vintage,

Floberts were made roughly between 1850 and 1932. They are distinguished as being probably the weakest single shot actioned pistols or rifles, ever commercially made in France.

They were usually chambered for .22"CB cap, .22"BB cap, .22" short  or .22" long cartridges. Occasionally you may come across a specimen chambered in .32" rimfire or in late production models .22" long rifle calibre.

Several variations of action were made, but none of them were particularly good, or strong. Just about what you'd expect from a firearm that retailed for US $ 2.50 new, in the 1920's.

I'd keep it as a wall hanger or conversation piece, and not take the risk of firing it with modern ammunition.

If you love your wife and kids, do them a favour and buy something more modern, or increase your life insurance considerably. lol.

Regards,

Harry

Harry, thanks for posting such interesting information.  The one I have actually shoots CB Shorts just fine.  The man from whom I obtained the pistol shot modern LR through it, and said they did just fine.  I had the pistol checked out, and it's sound.

I know there are different forms of Floberts, and that some have been structurally so weak that they blew up.  There is no problem with this one.  I won't be shooting anything stronger than CB's, though.

Am hoping someone will know something about the eagle/falcon stamp, or how to trace it.  Might not be possible, I know.

Wish there were still parlor shooting set-ups.  It's odd to be shooting Super Colibris and CB Shorts next to folks shooting things larger than 45's.

Thanks again, for your post!

Serena

Vsig,

If it's Jim Borton you want to contact, then go to the Forum 'General Discussion (Important Topics section at the top of the Forum). There you will see several topics started by Jim Borton. Left click on his name and Jims 'Profile' will appear. There you will find links to either send him a PM or an Email just click on which one you wish to use and when the window opens, type away.
