I keep a 1/4 inch short rope in my scope bag and lash it to the shooting house post whenever possable.  Hanging sandbags from the tripod works good too. 

Rock steady is what you want, get it anyway you can,

You can't get too steady, but you can get too heavy to be practical.  It's always a compromise.

Here's what I did with a coffee can full of lead and a steel sleeve.  Got lucky with the dimensions and didn't have to do any machining.  Even this moves in a brisk wind.
