75 foot target

I'm trying to find out about the 75 foot target that Hudson and others shot there records on as well as the rules they shot under. Can anyone point me to a source of this info? I have a 12 point indoor range and am thinking of doing a 100 shot match next year under those conditions. Thanks for any help

I'm thinking maybe the ASSRA 50' target is the same thing. Somewhere some time ago I read an article in a mag. that the ASSRA target was not quite right for 50'. Give Rudi Prusok (our archivist) a jingle; I'm sure he can help. Let us know what you find out, I'm interested too! Maybe a short article for the "Journal"?

Yes the ASSRA 50' target is in fact the old 75' target.

Bob

In the DSA shooting house there is a target shot by Chris Jansen that I believe to be the 75 foot target.  (By the north door) If you can get me the date, with my newly acquired resources I might be able to confirm that.  It has approximately 1/4 inch rings.  I have not found the 75 foot target that was used in classic gallery shooting of the 1900's and 1910's.  I do have the 75 foot target used in Wheatland and Toronto, Iowa ( both the man and ring)  which is a reduction of the 3/4 inch ring from 200 yards to 75 ft, just like the targets the DSA uses indoors now.

I have some targets from the "Outdoor Rifle Club" of Davenport that are perhaps a 75 foot target  (I think my dad has a couple hundred more), but I would want to confirm the dimensions by comparing with that target of Jansen's.

It is my thought, (visually without doing any measurements) that the ASSRA 50 foot target is a reduction of the 75 foot target in proportion to distance from 75 feet to 50 feet.

A few years ago I had to do some research to get enough information to fight off some printers who were selling cheap knock offs of ASSRA targets. While doing that research I found out that the 50’ target is in fact a 100 yard target reduced down to 75’ it was tried at a reduction of 50’ but the rings were too hard reproduce. They were too close and too fine. The decision was made to leave it at the 75’ size and call it a 50’ target because that is what most indoor ranges are today.

Did Hudson have a record gallery ?  Not doubting just wanted some details. I only hear about his 100 shot offhand at 200 yards.  Thinking about it was it 200 yards anyway. Could have been measured in Rods instead.

100 shots indoors sounds like fun. I can hang the ASSRA target at 75 feet in our club indoor range.  Little bit makes a big difference in difficulty. I will often use the 10 M air rifle target at 50' and it's a lot harder.  Shoot it side by side Walter Air rifle and CPA rimfire just to see what happens.  Different hole sizes makes it difficult to score properly but number of off shots is telling at times.

50 foot Practice target PDF

Does anyone have a correct regulation sized 50'  target in PDF  format that can be photocopied for practice purposes?

I use a 50' target I found on the web but I don't know how they compare to actual regulation targets so I have no way to keep track of my improvements score wise. Although I do know a bad shot when I make one no matter what targets I use! Roll Eyes

Best regards,

Darryl

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but here is an original target. It dates sometime after (probably shortly after) March, 1911.

I  have some of those Stevens targets.  Lebanon PA gallery match used them for the King match.  Rings on the ones I have are quite a bit bigger than ASSRA.  Will see If I can take a few pictures.

I have some Wyoming Schuetzen Union 50-foot targets. The scoring rings are 2.25" in diameter and the red is 2 inches.

I have an Outers target marked "NRA Official 50-FT Small Bore Target".  The scoring rings are 1.8" in diameter and the black is 1.5 inches.

I would guess that the WSU targets are probably 75 foot targets but if they were reduced the rings would be very difficult to score.  It would be hard to read the ring numbers (24, 23, etc) without a magnifying glass.  I can miss the larger target frequently enough to embarrass myself.  Using the smaller one would only make matters worse.

I have two old stevens 75 foot 25 ring targets. Stevens gave these away as a promotional item with a target on one side and a copy of a record setting target on the other side that had been fired with a Stevens rifle. My scanner doesn't seem to be working but I could snail mail you a copy if I could have you mail adress.

Here is a copy of an ad from a 1906 Shooting and Fishing. It states that Hudson shot at 75 feet on a target with a 1/4 inch center. This is the same as the ASSRA 50 foot target.
BUT I think it is possible that various gallaries may have had their own targets. Smiley

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. I also found a picture in Dutchers book (not a good picture but full size) of the Zettler target and the black and rings are the same as our ASSRA 50 foot as mentioned here. 1st14inf I sent you a email (said PM ment email) I would still like to see that target. I'm  still  looking for the article mentioning the 100 shot record, if I find it I will pass the information on.  Thanks again Bob
