I just got lucky at an auction and picked this one up. The wood is shot but the metal work and bore are excellent, grungy/dirty but not pitted. This should be a fine project.

That's going to be a great project rifle!  What's the caliber?  577-450?

Double D,  I think does in fact have a couple of these. It is not a 577-450 persay, supposedly it is a shorter round. And it sounds as though several folks have had good luck forming 50-70 brass and getting it to work. I think I'll go with a custom Darr mold for this one. I need to make a chamber cast as soon as I get it. Then build up the damaged stock with filler and send it off to be dupicated, at least I have that to work with. Inletting will be a job unless I can get this one certain company to do the duplicating, they do great work on butt stocks for any rifle with a two piece stock. This will be fun to shoot. Now I'm running out of room to store items.
I am posting a picture of my other purchase, an early Swiss freehand target pistol in 22. Nice engraving on it.

The chamber is Westley Richard Carbine No. 1.  It is sometimes referred to as the 1 1/2 inch Carbine. Bertram sells cases as the 500/450 No.1 Carbine...not cheaply.

British Miliaria forum has a lot of discussion on this cartridge.

I have two of these rifles both a No. 1 Carbine. I have shot one pleasant shooting.   I put the loads together to go to the Alberta Victorian rifleman shoot last year.

One of the guns I have came with 25 turned cases.  I'm not a fan of turned cases, but have to go with what you got. The cases are straight cylinder inside.  I filled them to the top with Fg and seated 405 grain 458 bullets on top.

This isn't a big shoulder breaker cartridge, and think that is why it so much fun.

In the next couple of days I am going try and make some brass from from some 450 Musket No.2.

Whitey,

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't know a lot about Martini's.  I do have a good deal of, but no where near enough research material on some Martini's and know how to look things up.

I appreciate all of the help. This should be a nice rifle when completed. Some think they are as ugly as, well you know, but they are nice well made rifles with smoth actions. At least it is not a French rifle as they are mostly ugly to the bone.

Whitey,

There's the well-known truth that the more you get into a subject, the better you realize that there are more things you don't know or haven't found out yet...  The more you know, the less you know!

That's a trueism if ever I read one, it not only applies to firearms, but also to women, bless them.
