I am planning a get together of single shot shooters and
collectors for the
evening of February 14th, 2009 at the above location. I will
be there by 6:00
pm. You may arrive anytime after that. We will go until we
get tired of each
other! I have planned this event to coincide with the popular Nations Gun Show in Chantilly,
VA. Chantilly is about a 2 hour drive from New Market.
This is a rather informal event and my thinking was
to have a midwinter
get together to talk about shooting, share ideas and maybe
bring a gun or
item along to share or project you have been working on
over the winter and get
some ideas from others on how to proceed.
This year I am hoping some of you will bring examples of loading tools, powder measures and optics.
I feel the more the merrier, as we all have a common
interest in shooting
and preserving these arms and our sport.
The location is the Opera House at New Market, New Market,
Virginia. We have
recently renovated the old theater on the upper level and
have a few banquet
tables to use for placing our items and for eating at.
If we all pitch in a few dollars for food we can order
something from one of
the local haunts. If there is a particular beverage you
desire please feel
free to bring it. I will try to have a couple of coolers
upstairs to keep them
cold!
I am getting use of the Theater again at no charge, but donations to the theater are
appreciated but in no way required. It would b a kind gesture to show appreciation for use of the Hall.
If you have any questions or need to get a hold of me you
can call or email
at the info at the top of the page. My cell phone number is
703-675-9960. The
number at the building is 540-740-8585.
Directions to the building are as follows;
From I-81 south or north, take New Market exit (264) At
the bottom of the
exit go east into town. It is a short distance to the
Congress Street/Rt. 11
intersection. Go left at that light and the building is a
block and a half down
on the left, 9357 Congress street. There is a sign in one
window that says “
The Opera House”. The building has a large Green topped
bell tower on it. The
double doors on the far right of the building is the
entrance to the upper level.
If you are coming from Rt. 211 over the mountains simply
follow it until you
come to the intersection of 211 and Congress street/Rt.11.
It is a tee in
the road and you have to turn. You want to turn left, the
building is about a
block and a half down on your right.
The New Market area has quite a few nice tourist points of
interest if you
want to come earlier and make a day of it. Following I have
included some
addresses and phone numbers of these as well as a couple of
hotels close by.
New Market Battlefield and Hall of Valor
8895 George Collins Drive
540-740-3101
They have a nice museum and a well produced film. The
battlefield is pretty
much as it was then and is not too large like some of the
Civil War fields
and makes it a nice visit.
Endless Caverns
1800 Endless Caverns Road
540-740-3993
This cave can be accessed easily from New Market. It is
south of town off of
Rt. 11. Just follow the signs, you can’t miss it.
Shenandoah Caverns
261 Caverns Road
Quicksburg, VA
540-477-3115
To get to this one the best bet is to take I-81 north until
you see the exit
sign for it. The Sliver Phoenix trading post is also at the
exit for the
cave. They have nice Native American crafts and used to be
my place to pick up
Buck Skinning books and magazines. Look for the big Tee
Pee!
Shenandoah Valley Visitors Center
Follow signs from the New Market exit. It is right at the
west side of the
exits and next to a 7-11. They have info on about
everything in the Shenandoah
Valley and the I-81 corridor.
The Gun Shop at Front Royal
28 East Jackson Street
Front Royal, VA
540-635-0455
This is John Appleton’s shop. His name comes up a lot in
the single shot
realm as a seller of Martini’s and that he is. He usually
has good stuff in his
shop, sometimes he even has a Fecker or Unertl in his
cases. It is a bit of a
drive from New Market, probably about an hour, but if your
trip brings you
by way of I-66 or you find you have time, stop in.
