Winter Gathering in VA

Print Post
Hello again,

I hope to have my "flyer" for the Gathering done sometime this weekend.

If you are interested and haven't already, please send me a PM with your Email address and I will send you the details.

If it is OK with the moderator and someon can tell me how, I will post it on this website as well.

I hope to be more organized this year, but only slightly. I really enjoyed to open forum we had last year and want to larglely keep it that way.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

We are set for Feb. 14th in New Market VA. THis is the same day as The Nations Gun SHow in DUlles VA, about an hour and a half away. That show is somewhere around 600-800 tables (Ican't remeber for sure).

GO to the show in the morning and head out. Hit a couple of the gun shops on the way, check out a battle field or maybe the NRA museum.
( I will list some of these in the flyer for those interested )

Make a good day of it!! ENd up with us eating pizza, and talking guns and shooting!!

This was one of the high points of my Winter last year... a definite remedy to the dread "cabin fever" that inflicts so many shooters.  I've already talked to a couple of last year's participants who are planning on bring more stuff for "Show-and-Tell" and maybe even a few things for sale.  If you can make it this year, I virtually guarantee you will love it.  BTW, see the Journal article that came out last Spring describing the previous Gathering if you would like additional details.

See ya there!

Being a gun looney such as I am oftentimes conflicts with my wife's plans of our doing things together. Yeah, she does resent my being away at shoots, gun shows, gun club, etc. Going to a gun related meeting on Valinetine's Day would put me way, wayyyyyy back in the Dog House. I'm in there often enough as it is. You folks with more understanding wives or no wives at all are fortunate indeed! Therefore, I won't be able to attend this time, but perhaps I can on a future, less coveted day. Am I the only one in this particular situation?                      Smitty       gotta go get ready for a gun show and swap meet this weekend

Smitty,

I understand your situation.I seriously considered another date. But decided to keep consistent with the theme of "A day of it" centered around the big gunshow in CHantilly.

Not everyone goes to the show, but several did last year. It happens that this year it all falls on Saturday.  Sad

I must admit to being a lucky man. There has been more than one Valentines in the last 15 years that my wife and I have gotten each other a gun of some sort.

She also paints Schuetzen targets and occaissionaly come out and shoot, though not as often as she once did.

Now if I could only get her to cast bullets!!!

BTW, We had at least two shooting woman there last year and hope for more this year. There is a nice resteraunt down the street a block, would be a good place for a Valentines dinner, if it helps anyone out!! Wink

Let me know if you need the number!

Hi Jon,    Is there a "Y" in town ?      Roll Eyes

Just kidding about staying at the YMCA, but what about a decent motel ?   Pennsylvania to Hay Market is a bit of a hike.

My wife and I will attend.  We live just over the West-ByGod-Virginia line, so it's a nice drive for us.  Where in New Market?

Glad to hear it!

It will be at the Opera House. It is right on main street.

All,

I lost my hardrive over the weekend and all of the info I had for New Market, etc and the flyer is gone.

I lost everything. All of the info many of you have given, load data, mechanical drawings, my team roster and newsletters. Everything. Cry

The point being, I need to make a new list and flyer. So if you haven't got it yet, it's 'cause it don't exist.

Does anyone out there have the stuff I sent last year? If so, can you email it to me so I have a starting point? Much thanks in advance if so.

WHat I will do for the time being is get the time and date and physical address and post it on this site. WHen I get a more proper document together I will send it.

I lost MS Office as well and can't seem to find the disc. The info may come out in MS Works format. I may need to ask someone to convert it to word for me if I don't find that darn disc.

Thanks for your patience!

Merwin

Sorry to hear it! It is amazing how in the past few years we have become so dependant on these darn computers! Best of luck getting your "life" back together. Don't worry too much about having a fancy flyer, as long as you can give us an address and date/time we will come!

Though posted much later than originally planned here is the info for the event.

I sure hope to see some of you there!

Jon

Event Location:
9357 North Congress Street (Rt. 11)
New Market,  VA  22844

I am planning a get together of single shot shooters and
collectors for  the
evening of February 14th, 2009 at the above location. I will
be there by 6:00
pm. You may arrive anytime after that. We will go until we
get tired of each
other! I have planned this event to coincide with the popular Nations Gun Show in Chantilly,
VA. Chantilly is about a 2 hour drive from New Market.

This is a rather informal event and my thinking was
to have a midwinter
get together to talk about shooting, share ideas and maybe
bring a gun or
item  along to share or project you have been working on
over the winter and get
some  ideas from others on how to proceed.

This year I am hoping some of you will bring examples of loading tools, powder measures and optics.

I feel the more the merrier, as we all have a common
interest in shooting
and preserving these arms and our sport.

The location is the Opera House at New Market, New Market,
Virginia. We  have
recently renovated the old theater on the upper level and
have a few  banquet
tables to use for placing our items and for eating at.

If we all pitch in a few dollars for food we can order
something from one  of
the local haunts. If there is a particular beverage you
desire please feel
free to bring it. I will try to have a couple of coolers
upstairs to keep them
cold!

I am getting use of the Theater again at no charge, but donations to the theater are
appreciated but in no way required. It would b a kind gesture to show appreciation for use         of the Hall.

If you have any questions or need to get a hold of me you
can call or email
at the info at the top of the page. My cell phone number is
703-675-9960. The
number at the building is 540-740-8585.

Directions to the building are as follows;

From I-81 south or north, take New Market exit  (264) At
the bottom of  the
exit go east into town. It is a short distance to the
Congress Street/Rt. 11
intersection. Go left at that light and the building is a
block and a half down
on the left, 9357 Congress street. There is a sign in one
window that says “
The  Opera House”. The building has a large Green topped
bell tower on it. The
double  doors on the far right of the building is the
entrance to the upper level.

If you are coming from Rt. 211 over the mountains simply
follow it until  you
come to the intersection of 211 and Congress street/Rt.11.
It is a tee in
the road and you have to turn. You want to turn left, the
building is about a
block and a half down on your right.

The New Market area has quite a few nice tourist points of
interest if you
want to come earlier and make a day of it. Following I have
included some
addresses and phone numbers of these as well as a couple of
hotels close  by.

New Market Battlefield and Hall of Valor
8895 George Collins  Drive
540-740-3101
They have a nice museum and a well produced film. The
battlefield is pretty
much as it was then and is not too large like some of the
Civil War fields
and makes it a nice visit.

Endless Caverns
1800 Endless Caverns Road
540-740-3993
This cave  can be accessed easily from New Market. It is
south of town off of
Rt. 11. Just  follow the signs, you can’t miss it.

Shenandoah Caverns
261 Caverns Road
Quicksburg, VA
540-477-3115
To get to this one the best bet is to take I-81 north until
  you see the exit
sign for it. The Sliver Phoenix trading post is also at the
  exit for the
cave. They have nice Native American crafts and used to be
my place  to pick up
Buck Skinning books and magazines. Look for the big Tee
Pee!

Shenandoah Valley Visitors Center
Follow signs from the New Market exit.  It is right at the
west side of the
exits and next to a 7-11. They have info on  about
everything in the Shenandoah
Valley and the I-81 corridor.

The Gun Shop at Front Royal
28 East Jackson Street
Front Royal,  VA
540-635-0455

This is John Appleton’s shop. His name comes up a lot in
the single shot
realm as a seller of Martini’s and that he is. He usually
has  good stuff in his
shop, sometimes he even has a Fecker or Unertl in his
cases.  It is a bit of a
drive from New Market, probably about an hour, but if your
trip  brings you
by way of I-66 or you find you have time, stop in.
