Newbie: BrowningM1885 question(s) thanksfor advice

For the past week+ I've been browsing this informative site to get an education about
single shot rifles. A friend showed me  his M1885 Browning and offered to sell it to me. I thought it was beautiful  and like new condition (less than 100 rounds shot). He had  a gunsmith install a buckhorn elevator rear sight and soldered a blade sight on the front. I always admired the falling block browning/ winchesters and now had a chance to acquire one. My friend is a semi-pro carver and stippled the forearm and rear stocks plus carved an elk on the rear stock.
A few questions please. First, how many .270 calibers where made? ((gun is approximately 15 years old - last Browning production run #01409NZ247. Approximate  fair market value? Should I put a scope on the rifle to properly take advantage of the 270 caliber? Is there a Browning phone number to call for some my questions? Is there a Browning manual on-line?   Thank you for your time and expertise beforehand. You have a wonderful and gracious forum

usc67,

Since I specialize in the Browning M1885 black powder cartridge rifles I cannot answer some of you questions.  What I do know is Browning does not generally divulge manufacturing data for individual models, so the number of rifles built is not available.  I would recommend you install a scope.  Your rifles was manufactured in 1991 and there is a manual available on line at the link below.
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

As for value, I recommend you check out the two main firearm on-line sites, GunBroker and GunsAmerica.  Although the current listing may give you a good idea of value, doing a search for firearms sold on the sites will give you a better idea.

My 2005 Bluebook of Gun Values says your rifle is worth $775 in 100% condition $585 (98%), $455 (95%), and $365 (90%).  But since the rifle has been modified, dependiing on who is buying it, the value may be less, although I have no idea how much.

Hope this helps.

Texasmac,

Thanks for your response and information. Is there a scope base that can work with/complement the buck horn rear sight.  What scope for deer/varmint hunting is streamline,if any, to compliment the M1885 design. I was told the buckhorn + front sight installation cost the prior owner $200+ .  thanks again for anyone's ideas and any information

I do not know how many were chambered in 270, but it took me over a year to find one at a somehwat resonable price and that was five years back.

In my experience you do not see to many chambered in 270 come up on the auction sites.  If you look on the recomended web sites search under both high wall and 1885.

I purchased mine strictly for hunting.  I put a Kahles 3X9 scope on it using the Leupold mounts.  I do not know if these mounts would clear your buckhorn sight.

Mine is pretty accurate with handloads and some factory loads it generally keeps 3 shot groups under 1 inch at 100 yards.
