I'm just reading a new book that might be of some interest to some of the members here, just in case you wind up with a gift card to Borders, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, or Amazon.com for Christmas.
It is entitled "The American Rifle--a biography" by Alexander Rose.  It is pretty much a biography of the rifle in America its development and the economics and politics surrounding it.  Its very well written and I'm finding it to be a fascinating real so far. While it does really not mention single shots in much detail --and I am not into the Schuetzen era yet--it is a really good general history.

The author is a highly regarded historian who's most recent publication was the well-received "Washington's Spies". The book is copiously footnoted and is supplemented with an extensive bibliography that is published on line to keep the size and cost of the book down to a manageble level---a very nice consideration.

I'm so glad you posted this.  I work in a radio station in my real life and I had the opportunity to interview Alex on the air and then meet him.  His publicist sent me a copy of the book and I immediately read it cover to cover.  It's a great book and I highly recommend it.  He came by our studios on his book signing tour and we got to sit down and talk firearms for a while.  He's a very intelligent young man that has a great writing style and a love of history.  He signed my copy of his book and the other copies we gave away as prizes to our callers.  I've been in touch with him since, and I'm hoping he comes back this way for research on one of his upcoming works.  I told him I'd take him shooting and he seemed to like that idea.  (Who wouldn't?)
If anyone has a copy of this book, Alex has graciously offered to autograph and send me some book plates.  If you want one to go with your copy, PM me with what you'd like it to say and your mailing address.  I'll be sure to get it to you.
Happy New Year everybody!

P.S.-  I'll collect names for a few weeks and then send them all to Mr. Rose at once.  I'll update any additional information on this post.
