Muzzle blast muffler

I am looking for plans on how to build a noise suppression box (sort of muffler) that will cut down the muzzle blast noise when I fire my rifle.  I’m not looking for a silencer or anything else that attaches to the barrel.  In my mind’s eye, I envision a short box or tunnel with baffling (or??) to absorb the blast noise, but I have no idea if this would work.

I have a safe place to shoot, but I do not want to annoy the neighbors.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

When I worked at a gunshop in California, one of my customers was Merrill Martin.  He described a box he used to shoot through in his basement range as about eight feet long, two feed on a side, lined with egg crate type foam.  It was hinged on one side to help clean it out periodically, and set level to the firing point on elevated saw horses for offhand pistol shooting.  I don't recommend using it with black powder!   Grin

Saw one made of 3-5 tires wired together hung from a tree limb that you shot through, the internal cavities were stuffed with insulation with chicken wire inside to hold the insulation in place, sorry no photos but shooter that constructed and used it said that it really reduced the noise level with the lower velocity loads but really did not work well with the High-Vel loads. Remember seeing another that used a plastic 55 gal barrel with a removable baffle system inside it, remember that both builders said they were no good/dangerous for black powder  Smiley because they collected the unburned powder insides the baffles.
Good luck,

Once you get over the tax stamp which is do-able permit wise and 200 bucks a real silencer is not a bad way to go.  Have been thinking about one myself. Basement range all I shoot now is Air guns, Would be safe with rimfires if I could supress the noise.

Charlie Dell just shot out the window of his shop through a "tunnel" composed of a wire mesh form covered with some sort of waterproof sheeting.  It didn't suppress much sound, but from inside the shop (or the mudroom attached to the shop) the sound didn't bother the nearest neighbor who was 1/4 mile away through the woods.  Wink

I have seen on the www pix of a sound suppressor used for - get ths - a 155;mm self-propelled howitzer!  The M109 would drive under it and fire through it (at some elevation of like 45 degrees).  It looked HUGE!
