	This question is for someone who is knowledgeable on Ballard sights. I have a long range sight, and I was wondering if someone could tell if it is an original. The sight that I have is pictured on page 288 in John Dutcher's book as Marlins improved long range peep sight. I could e-mail the two scans that I have taken of the sight. I don't know how to post the pictures on line. The sight was purchased on a Ballard #7 long range rifle .Thanks,4570sharpshooter

	The pictures dont give enough detail to tell for sure. It is a Ballard long range sight. Whether its a reproduction or not, I cant tell. Tried messing with the image, still can tell. Joe.

	I too am unable to discern if it's a great repro, or an original. Unless there's a big refund from the seller on the line, I wouldn't worry about it. When they're that good I just forget about it, and enjoy it.-Vall

	4570SS, Here's the latest pictures. The numbers look to have been made with modern stamps. The surface finish on the eyepiece looks like early Axtell. The knurl around the outer edge of the eyepiece looks new to me and not the quality one would expect from an original Ballard sight. I think it's an Axtell sight. You could have done a lot worse. 	I would tend to agree with Westerner. The eyecup is questionable to me also. Its just one of those things you have to touch and feel to get the appropriate answer. Am curious about the Long Range rifle. Can you provide the serial number? The base of the sight going over the front of the wood tends to tell me its a replacement. It would have had the short base. Later the holes were moved foreward to accomodate the longer base. Thats why I ask about the serial number. Origionals should not go over the wood. rustyrelx Don

	The sight does indeed go over the wood. There are three hole on the rifle . the two outside holes are 1.450 and the second set (where the sight is mounted)are 1.125, and to answer your other question....Serial #795. I don't know why they did not use the front screw hole and come back 1.125 for the other tap instead of coming from the rear screw foward?????Thanks for the reply. 4570ss

	They probably drilled and tapped the front hole to use another tang sight, such as a Stevens, which is very close to the 1.45" spacing. I doubt they drilled it to relocate the Ballard sight.

	Due to the sharpness of the numbers and hashmarks and the eye cup. My guestimation is that it is either a Mike Stevens of an early Axtel. Or possibly an origional sight that was refurbished by By Mike Stevens. 40 Rod

	The gentleman that had this rifle was a friend of the late Mike Stevens. I have a couple of Mike Stevens sights that I purchased from this certain gentleman. Sadly he passed away almost two years ago, leaving an outstanding collection of rifles. I didn't know if this was a very good example of an original Ballard sight or a copy. Thanks again, 4570ss

	Joe, I have not shot this rifle yet. I had posted earlier about paper patching , and thats where I may start. The rifle is indeed 44/100, as for the bore it looks good. I still hope to get back to my late friends loading room and look for the pp bullets . I just have to make arrangements with his widow and set a time. I know that he had to have some already cast....he was that way. I have the cases,loading dies,sights and a few loaded rounds. Thanks for doing the legwork on posting the pix. 4570ss

	Just a follow up on the 44/100. I did get to look through my friends loading room in search of cast paper patch bullets. I found about a hundred already cast and about 80 used cases. Now for the good part... I found the mould for these bullets. I brought them upstairs into the office and left a fair bid for these items. I will give her some time to check and see if this is a fair offer. I might be into paper patching shortly. 4570ss
