ok    hows about a challenge    28-30 or 38 ballard long
the 28 is about the best "compromise" cartridge available
flat trajectory, bucks the wind good, no recoil and there is something about that slim brass that is beguiling
38 is so weird everyone should own one    imho

If the gun makers relied on me, they would all be standing on the corner with cardboard signs.  But I did not see a .38-55 on the list.  One suitable for 200 or 300 yard target work. New high walls in .38-55 are apparently only a phone call away.

I've been thinking about an offhand practice rifle in .38 Special or .32 S&W Long or one of their longer variants.  Something accurate enough for 50 or 100 yards but with more bang than a .22 rimfire.  I don't think you can buy one off-the-shelf, however.

And if $ was not much of a problem, I would try to find a modern variant of a Winchester Special Sporting rifle.  Mine would be a .22 LR, just 'cause.

I'm growing increasingly fascinated with that new Ruger/Federal 327 magnum or whatever they call it.
I haven't found any in a couple of shops I've visited.  but it sounds like a modern version of the old Ballard extra-long or an h&r 32 magnum-magnum.

With the right loads & etc and heavy cast bullets it might do well on the schuetzen range and still make a nice small game hunting rifle; particularly if you had a gun you could switch between sporting and offhand stocks with out too much difficulty.

I've been thinking about that cartridge, too.  Do it up with a .308 barrel and a 12" twist for longer bullets...

I like odd calibers, so if I was going to buy a new gun, and the Hi Wall was the platform, I'd want one in .38-56, with a fast enough twist to stabilize bullets that could perform out to 500 yds.
But that's just me! Smiley

Dave
Thanks. It is  actually a Cumberland Arms action with the top hex. Winchester breech block and single set trigger. Green Mountain half round barrel 30 inches. Fairly nice wood. Globe front with inserts, rear sight made by a local craftsman. Chamber reamer by Dave Kiff (sp). Haven't shot it for a while, so needs a new home.
