What front site?
Oct 5th, 2008 at 10:01pm
Print Post
Finally got my rifle (CPA) back from the smith and everything is up and running except the front site. I plan on using a soul sight on the back but the front has holes already drilled and tapped for a slide in type Redfield International.  The Redfields are very had to find, atleast for me, and the holes in the front where there with the used Douglass barrel.
What I'm getting to is what shall I do for a front site? Take theRedfiels mount off and dove tail for a Lyman 17a or WHAT?
Any help would be appreciated.

Van,

A Lyman #77 fits the same block (like a Unertl scope block) as the Redfield.  I see them all the time on flea-Bay, and they may even be in current production for all I know... you might check their website.

There's a Redfield Olympic front globe on EvilBay at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) right now.  It was the only dovetail block front sight I saw just now, checking Redfield, Lyman and Parker-Hale.

Van, Sarco used to sell the Parker Hale globe front sight with mounting block and a set of Lee Shaver inserts. Haven't seen them listed in the latest issue of shotgun news but might be worth a shot giving them a call and see if they still have any. They are used and the paint or whatever was used may be worn or scratched. Think they went for about $25 bucks. Hope this helps. Frank

Check Neil Johnsons Gunsmithing inc in Colorado  His web site has used and consignment sights.

I think most Airgun and Anschutz sights fit that dovetail too, Neil would know for sure

The rifle would surely look better if you used one of the old or repro. Stevens globe front sites from Riflesmith or MVA and had the appropriate
dovetail slot cut in the barrel right through the tapped holes.

Actually, if the hole spacing is the standard .560", you can cut a 3/8" dovetail right in between the holes, and have the option later of using a sight base and clamp-on front sight.  For a budget sight, you can use one of the Lyman 17A series in the correct height for your back sight and stock design.  Go with Lee Shaver inserts, though, you won't regret it!
