What's the serial number on it.  Maybe whoever has the gun would want it, and you may be able to find them on the Ruger # 1 Group at :  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

That number looked familiar! Thought it was my old scope from my gun, but looked up in my records and mine was 78-1066.

Mad Mike and marlinguy ,
I just checked both of your serial numbers, 78-1066 and 78-1081, to see if they were listed in the Ruger group serial number files, they are not listed, the highest number they have listed is 78-0896.

The Info I found on them is that only 1000 were made but both of your numbers are above 1000 ? maybe they were over runs ?.

Like I said, I don't think it's ever been on a rifle, & it's packaged in a heavy cardboard tube with polyfoam fitted ends with the serial number penciled on it. There's even a little pamphlet in thier. I'd say it came straight from Lyman. Checked it against some of my rifles, & it seems to fit (lengthwise) 28"barrel dovetail slots. Maybe I'll give Steve Earle a call for some bases.    thanx,MIKE

Well, for what it is worth, I just bought the following last week, taking delivery Friday, 04-Dec-09.
1) Ruger #1 50th Anniversary $1,100.00 + $50.00 shipping purchased off Gun Broker. Just gun, no box etc but unfired.
AND:
2) Ruger #1 Lyman Centennial #2 grade with all accessories. (Green Felt Lined box) $1,300.00 + $100.00 shipping, 68lbs shipping weight. From Two Wright Gun Shop in Springtown Tx.  Serial # L-78-0255

These were the absolutely best prices I could find anywhere. However, in the words of Dave Ramsey, Beans & Rice - Rice & Beans for the next 10 months. And those 5 Granddaughters did not REALLY want anything from Grandpa for Christmas.   Grin
