Can anyone tell me something about this proof mark, I think it is British, but find no reference in any of my books. The same stamp is on the receiver and the breech block, no other markings on the rifle except the forward face of the receiver.  The rifle is a Stevens 44 1/2.

The proof is English. It is a London proof, the Birmingham proof has a crown in place of the lion. The proof is shown on pages 103 and 110 in The Standard irectory Of Proof Marks. It was in use from 1868 untill 1925 and was used to indicate a single, final proof with loads designed for temporary or provisional proof.
