That gentleman bids and buys a whole lot of Ballard stuff! I've given up or lost out to him on more occasions than I can recall. Seems to be a serious Ballard parts buyer!

I sure could have put that buttstock to use.  I got the forestock but wanted the set.   Embarrassed   I bid a rediculous amount. Little did I know there is someone more rediculous than me out there.  Cheesy

It'll be awhile before another that nice shows up.  Embarrassed

Oh well.

I wonder if that was the same guy who paid over $300 for a plain old flat spring lever for a high-wall (as listed by our old friend Joe Harz?)  I guess some good things come to those who wait, huh?  Wink

This last weekend I was visiting a friend who has a larger computer screen with much better graphics than I have, we looked at the Ballard stock that was for sale on eBay and both agreed that it was junk with lots of hacks and cracks. eBay is a good place to sell things, but not generally a good place to buy things, although there is occasionally a jewel in the mud.

This is the curse of ebay. Now every yahoo with an old stock will think its worth $800. somebody with a good stock or by a named stock maker will want $1000 and somebody on ebay will pay it.

Right you are 40Rod! Ebay has definitely been the demise of real pricing of gun parts, for many years now! As have the various gun auction sites for complete guns!
Still, there are things that can't be found anywhere else but Fleabay. 10 years ago I found a lot of good collectable gun items there, but haven't found anything for the last several years that I wanted to step up for.

It can go either way on fleabay. I picked up a nice Ideal #5 micrometer powder measure for $58.00 a couple weeks ago. I think overall I've had more good luck than bad.
The buttstock that I missed out on might not have been perfect. Weve all seen worse examples restored to the point you can hardly tell it from new. Seldom do you see a Ballard stock that isnt cracked at the wrist.  My only worry was if I had won the thing and then found the wrist was smaller than my action. In that case I suppose I'd have had to relist it and hope I got my money back.  If anyone has a spare 6 1/2 buttstock, I'm looking for one. Also an original long range Ballard stock.  Like you said Vall, all the old cheap parts have been bought up long ago.  I suppose a new replacement stock would be about equal in value to a mismatched original ??   Huh I just happen to like original parts if I can get them.  Thats just me. Cheesy

Gentlemen: As you can see I am rustyrelx. I have been a SERIOUS collecter of Ballards for over 40 years. I have been so fortunate as to start early in this fun. Smiley J. Dutcher had asked me to send him pictures and info on my Ballards for the book but I never got around to it. Feeling very ashamed about that.I would have liked to share. As to the stock in question here I was putting back together a rifle that I had with a mismatch buttstock. Low and behold this is the right buttstock for the rifle now its all matching. The owner said he had it for over 40 years. I feel very lucky n being able to put it back together. Seldom do we ever get a chance like that. Iknow this is the wrong forum but it now seems as I have an extra stock available. Contact me if desired. AND I would have NEVER paid such a price if I did not have the rest of the rifle. I felt duty bound to put it all back together. Thank You

Ya I would agree the days of inexpensive parts is over. So are inexpensive rifles. Seems like anything I'm interested in everybody else is too. driving those prices. I'm just fortunate that I got started on Ballards in the 60's.Had networking all over the US. Before the days of the computer. Computer just made it easier to find stuff. Then everybody else looked too. $10 parts climbed to $5oo just like that wow.
This never was an inexpensive hobby, seems like always was expensive.
But I sure do like Ballards.
