The bore is about .54 smoothbore and only goes down the muzzle about 14", but the bolt is about 21 1/2" back from the muzzle.

You have a Zimmerstutzen rifle.   Looks like the breech mechanism is missing. and possibly the barrelette. Some Zimmers have a short barrelette just ahead of the breech.  Does it have one?  Huh

Yeah, I have to agree with Joe, it's probably a Zimmerstutzen or "Parlor Rifle" however, it seems to be a variation on the more commen design;

Is there a 4mm barrel down in there somewhere?

from the breech forward the first 7 1/2 inches of the big barrel has a sleeved insert when I looked down with a light all I could see was crud and grease

the action end there is about a 3/8" round by 1/4" deep (priming pocket)?

Ill take it to the farm and really hose it out

I still need help on the priming system I will half to look harder at the links provided so far  thanks

half to get to work

After you get done hosing the innards, check to see how much is missing.  I've seen a couple of Zs that were converted to regular .22 rimfires.  That may be easier than restoration.

It's a Zimmer, likely a 4mm gun. The # on the muzzle is the ball size which would vary by .1/mm. My guess is that it's a trainer-guild gun, the breech which appears to be a simple cam over type is gonna be tough to come up with.

It' a girl..Oh, the rifle, One of 'em is a Winchester thumb trigger rifle. No finger trigger or t.guard. The other is a German zimmerschutzen. They were usually 4mm. The barrel insert(a short section of barrel, usually about 10 inches long may be missing. They were usually held in with a set screw or a dovetail wedge.  R. B.

The loading system on the Zimmerstutzen uses a seperate loading piece. One of the guys that shoots in this years postal match has one similar and had a machinist friend make him an extra,,in case he lost it. Wihout both that and the barrel insert it's a nice wall hanger. Parts are still around and I would hunt a while before converting to .22. It's a fairly plain, but very nice Zimmerstutzen.

Old guns, dogs and kids helping Dad (or Grandpa?)...it don't get much better than that, even if some of the guns are not on subject!   Grin  No need to apologize!
