Being Shipped ...38-55 Ideal 375166 BPCR Molds

Shooting black powder using a 38-55 with a 1:18 twist … the old Ideal 375166 calculates to 17.65 factor. Who’s interested in a group buy for this old Ideal mold?

Background:
Don Miller did an excellent article for the Spring 2007 issue of the Black Powder Cartridge news entitled … A New Twist Rule Applied to Black Powder Rifles. In his very extensive calculation, he determined that the Ideal 375166 bullet will have the best ballistics characteristics in a BPCR with a 1:18 twist

I contacted Lou Sellman, a Lyman mold distributor and asked him if he would contact Lyman Products to make a Special Run of the Ideal 375166 mold. He agreed to do it if there was a minimum order of 25.

Last year, Lou did a special run with Lyman for the old Ideal 457192 (45-75) mold.  The cost was $65 plus shipping.  Currently is working another special run for the Ideal 462560 mold

I also might be interested, but will have to know more:  I didn't see the BPCR News article, was this a paper exercise or did the author shoot the 330gr. Lyman from a 1 in 18 barrel at silhouette ranges?  Traditional sources indicate that weight (length) to be marginal for that twist.  Secondly I would need to see a dimensioned drawing.  I have the Lyman catalog illustration, but 38's are worse than 40's for varying all over the place.  The range is from the modern .375 all the way into the mid 380's for some original rifles.  What did you have in mind for size?

Joe and 1878:  You are asking questions that cannot be answered presently unless I had an original Ideal 375166 and had cast with it at various alloys.

You see, this mold has not see the light of day since the early 1970's and prior.

The group buy is to obtain 25 persons or more that want to buy the mold.  Then Lou Sellman, a Lyman mold distributor will put up $600.  Then Lyman will pull the 375166 original cherry off the shelf and cut the number of molds requested.

You know 1878 - I too would like to see Lyman's dimensioned drawings for the mold but. in fact I have never seen a dimensioned drawing for any of the molds that they currently produce.

Don Miller did not shoot any of the 24 black powder bullets that he did the revised Greenhill forumula in his article.  For the 375166, the dimensions in the article were:
Diameter - 377
Weight - 330gr
Length - 1.165
Length in calibers - 3.090
Estimated fps - 1300

I have an original Ideal 37583 (145gr) mold that casts a 380 bullet using 1:16 alloy

HuhJohn boy, I like the others would be interested, but would like to know the dimensions. Also did Lyman's last cherry have square bottomed grooves or rounded. Thanks for effort in putting this together.    Dave

singleshot1 ... Like I said previously I don't have this information because the mold has not been cut for close to 40 years.

The mold will be cut with the original cherry or from the original dimensions that Lyman has.  See the only dimensions that I posted previously.  If you know anyone that has the original mold and has cast from it that was sold by Ideal PRIOR to the early '70's ... give them a shout.  I'd be interested too.  Otherwise, look at the picture of the original bullet ...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Please remember this:
This mold will never be a production run from Lyman.  Lou Sellman, a Lyman mold distributor, will pay for and own the cherry and he will be the only source for the mold ... if this group buy ever gets off the ground

If it's any consolation, a group of us through Lou Sellman, purchased the cherry for the out of production Ideal 457192 mold.  I and one other person had samples of the original bullet and the special run mold was dead nuts on the original

If you or anyone else wants the 457192, they were all sold but Lou is ordering more ... (he also owns the cherry for this mold).  Send me a PM or mail and I'll give you the ordering details

And I might add, don't let anyone tell you a 330 -335gr bullet will not shoot from your 38-55.  Here's a couple  of 2006 pictures that I have not fine tuned the recipe for:

100yd target

200yd target ... the 8 ring groups were sight adjustments and both targets were shot with the H&R Target Model rifle
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Update:  The holes marked D in the 10 ring are the final elevation and windage adjustments

Back Up ... For Lou to have Lyman make the mold, he needs 35 orders.  Lyman threw him a curve - they now want $1600 for 2 cherries

I have the group buy posted on several forums.  There are now 31 individuals that want the mold with many Maybe's.  If some of the Maybe's changed to to Yes (ya know, a nice Christmas present to yourself) ... it would be a GO!

$1600 for the Cherry(s) to make a short-run of molds? PLUS $50-60 for each mold?

For that, you could just order 40 custom molds from (insert your favorite custom mold-maker), AND you could be  sure of the dimensions, too.

Who does Lyman think they are? RCBS?

I agree with Paul on this one.

The targets shown  are not what I would consider acceptable accuracy. I'm not trying to be a smart --- but my piece of crap Badger barrel will shoot much better than that with the Saeco 300 tapered. Most new barrels are too small for the old 166 bullet. They could be sized I suppoze, Ive not had much luck with sizing.  Also I have an old adjustable .38 ideal mold that looks very similar to the 166 bullet. It's not tapered and shoots just so so.  Prices are just getting stupid !
I need a new cam for my old Honda trials bike. Powroll wants $200.00 bucks for a rebuilt cam, for a Honda !!!

Like Paul said.

Westerner - Small correction.  The targets I posted were not shot using the Ideal 375166 ... The bullet was the Lyman 378674 using the H&R 38-55 Target barrel back in 2006l!  You know, the El Cheapo $400 rifle

This October at Ridgway with a revised recipe and a Uberti HiWall ... settings were otained on the vernier (200-500m) and the Rams dropped consistently with this bullet and the revised recipe

If a 378674 bullet will shoot to 500 meters and the Ideal 375166 calculates to 17.65 in a 1:18 twist barrel ... I definately expect better accuracy using this old Ideal re-make mold

I'm using the old Ideal 376 272 mold, which casts a 330 gr. bullet that is designed to be breechseated, with forward lands of .360, and rear lands of .382" as cast.
I'm shooting it in a Schoyen Ballard with a 1-16" twist, and it (we) have shot a best group of .75" at 100 yds.
I don't need another mold, and I think for breechseating this would be a better choice than the 375166 personally.

Marlinguy, proof is on the paper and for a 1:16 twist, sounds like the Ideal 3765 272 is a very good bullet.  How does it shoot at longer distances?  Using original powder, do you know the twist ratio for this bullet in a 1:16 barrel?

Jonhboy, what is a twist ratio and what does it do, or tell you? I'm not into all the high tech stuff. How do you find the twist ratio of a bullet?

Joe - I'll let you read about twist ratio and what is does.  Here's plenty of links using 'ballistic twist ratio' on Google ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

I guess you missed the same information also at the beginning of this thread.    If you want to read Don Miller's article in detail, contact BPC news and buy the Spring 2007 issue ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

And Joe - my name is John or John Boy - not 'bub' with double exclamation points
