Scope collecting information

I have tried to do a web search for information on antique or older scopes with no avail. I have to believe that such a sigth exists. I have "the book" on the subject, but would like something with more teeth. Like a collectors sight.

Does anyone know where I can look?

All my searches turn up things for sale, will commerece kill the internet?

Merwin,
I don't know how "old" your looking for but if you need Info on Unertl try

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

Over 500 serial numbers listed, some with dates, how to adjust, how to ID the different models, pictures,  etc.

Shooter_1,

I am interested in scope history from civil war to the 1960's. Even some from the 1970's.

Of course the obvious ones, target spots, litschert, fecker and unertl. But also the stevens, other lymans, winchesters, etc. Like to know more about the mounts and power boosters.

I am finding myself more an more interetsed in the older weavers as well. I had a J2.5 with a litschert spotshot booster on it I kind of wish I still had. Traded it for a receiver.

Thanks for the info.

Paperback of ?? Is this Old Scopes you refer to? That's been out in paperback ever since Nick first wrote it.
Speaking of Old Scopes, by Nick Strobel. It's better than anything that went before, since there wasn't anything, but it is hugely lacking in a lot of info on old scopes!
I've collected them for some time, and found that old catalogs, flyers, etc. have much info, and really are valuable information when I can find them.
Merwin,
I have two Weaver J2.5's with Litschert adapters on them. One has the Spot-Shot, and the other has an even rarer Varmint Master with adjustable objective, and threaded lense cap.. Drop me a email if you're interested in either or both.-Vall

The "Book" I refered to in my original post is in fact the Stroble book. It is a great reference, no doubt, but you know how these things go...when you get the bug you need MORE!

Val,
I have a pretty decent collection of old shooters bibles and gun digest reprints and originals dating back into the 1930's. They are a great source. I will keep looking for more catalogs and such. The most informative to me are the ones from the 1950s-early 60's.

Am hoping there is a great little know web site out there put together by some die hard collector. Kinda like some of the reloading tool sites.

The search continues.

Merwinbray,

You would do well to get a copy of "The Gun Digest Book of Scopes and Mounts" by Bob Bell.  Besides the how-it-works, terminology, sighting-in and so forth, there is a large section of thumbnail histories of Litschert, Stevens, Fecker, etc., together with descriptions of the models offered, up to the 1983 publication date.  Even Leatherwood, although not current enough to cover their new line of Malcolm replicas.  Bell is a good writer and apparently scopes are a real hobby interest to him, not just a reviewer's job.  Good stuff!

Merwin,
I'm an amatuer at old scopes, but have a close friend who rebuilds and collects them far more than myself. He's a great resource for me personally, and we will have tables and displays beside each other this weekend at our collector's show. I'll check with him to inquireif he knows of any other resources for scope info.-Vall
