Stolen Schuetzen Rifle in PA ETA photos

Moderators, if this should be in a different area please move it

The Ruger No. 1 Schuetzen rifle I was selling was stolen while in care of UPS and if anyone comes across it I (and the buyer) would appreciate a "heads up." It has been entered NCIC as stolen firearm by the local PD, Swatara Township in PA.  It is a blued Ruger No.1 with a heavy Douglas barrel in .32-40. It has a front sight base, is drilled and tapped for scope blocks and has Weaver adaptors on the Ruger bases. The forearm has a mount for a palm rest and this is the older model with the red recoil pad. The serial number is 130-21243. It was last seen with a set of rings mounted on the Weaver bases and packed in a light brown / tan hard case with broken clasps. Also in the case was the palm rest, a breech seater and a bullet mould. I will add some photos to this thread tomorrow.

It was last known to be at the Harrisburg, PA UPS center, if you come across it please notify me and the Swatara Township Police who have reported it stolen. Their number is 717-558-6900.

Thank you very much for reading this.

The butt plate was not stolen but the bullet seater and palm rest were as was a bullet mould with handles.

I had planned on e-mailing you for the last couple of days to ask how the search was coming.  That really stinks that such a good rifle would end up not only leaving the "family" but probably be out of action altogether since so few folks are "into" shooting that caliber.

Are you getting any help from the "nice" folks at UPS?  They were so quick to raise their rates on perfectly legal shipment of handguns, and are still shipping so many guns of all types, I hate to think of what must be going on at some of their shipping docks, etc.  Please keep me informed, especially if (or hopefully, when) it turns up.  Best of luck to you, my friend.

GF,
UPS has been a pain throughout this process, the local PD and the local ATF office were actually very easy to deal with. Of course the real victim here is Shooter_1 who is out of a wonderful rifle. I will be sending his money back tomorrow (we were giving UPS a chance to find it) and filed my insurance claim with UPS today. The trooper attached to the ATF office called around to the local shops when I first contacted him so they are on the look out as well. Since there is a small market for this type of rifle I am hoping it will eventually turn up, I doubt it is much use to most criminals.

I am making up a "flyer" with photos and information and someone from the N-SSA forum will be posting it at gunshows in the area. I am thinking of asking her to just give it to the dealers and the security staff, I would hate for the criminal to see the flyer and throw the rifle away instead of trying to sell it to a dealer there where they might be able to contact one of the off duty officers working security.

Hi Jason,

Shame to here about the rifle, but it's probably in someone's gun safe.

I've never lost a firearm but one UPS driver got me for $400 cash on a COD package. She had done this before and they nailed her on this package.

The next time the terminal forman made the deliverly and he never does that. He dropped off one package and kept the second package. Of course that one had my new cordless drill, Frued saw blades, and a bunch of misc tools, all at x-mass time.

UPS gave me a hard time but then changed there tune when I told them the terminal manager was NOT allowed on my property again and then asked if I needed to get a restraining order. A VP of UPS replied NO, we'll take care of it. Amazon promptly issued a credit to my Visa card.

Unfortunately I've had two stolen in shipment that were headed my way via UPS! I don't use them any more, but some folks insist on sending items to me through UPS, and if it's something I REALLY want, I refuse to let it be shipped to me via UPS.
I hope it turns up, but I haven't heard of one yet being found.

For what its worth, when I ship a rifle it goes via US Postal Service Priority Mail, Insured, with Delivery Confirmation.  Price is reasonable, service has been super and they don't dump expensive packages on your doorstep exposed to stray dogs, neighbors and felonious passers by  if you aren't home!  When I buy a rifle, I insist that the seller ship it via US Mail.  If he won't, he doesn't get my money.

USPS is definitely the way to go. Just recently shipped a rifle and accessories, totaled 26 lbs, priority mail, registered, insured for $33. It went from my hands at the counter to a locked cage in the post office and was delivered two days later in perfect condition. UPS wanted $39 for the same package shipped ground.

Oy yoy!

Not a good scene at all. I hope it shows up!

As a Canadian, and having to deal with cross border issues, USPS has always provided fast and cost effective service, while UPS and FedEx have both been obstinate rip-offs.

I, also, gotta put in my voice with the Post,, as being "the" way to ship.

Best of luck!

Cheers

Jason,

That is horrible to hear about. I hope you are able to get your claim paid. We use UPS at work, not my decission. A lot of high end equipment. The boxes show up damaged all the time. On occaision, we refuse to accept a package it is damaged so bad. However, in our case, it is all coming from a distributor.

About the USPS. My cousin, who posts on this forum and who sold you that Martini, sold and shipped a gun. He put it in two packages, barrel in one and action/buttstock in other, and it was handled at the other end by an FFL. The barrels never showed, the action did. They were show on tracking to be togehter the entire trip, but somehow, half the gun was stolen in shipping. He had a heck of a time with dealing with the USPS on the claim. He used them on advice from many shooters, including me, that it was the safe way to ship. Beware.''

I am always nervous when I ship a gun, especially an old one, by any method.

I'm quite confident that I ship more guns than most anyone elsew on this board. I have shipped via "Registerd Mail" only withut ever having a damaged or missing firearm.  Reg. mail is cheaper that priority mail but a tad slower as everyone that handles the parcel must sign for it. Never a problem in eight years of using Reg. mail via USPS.    Ken

I agree fully with Ken.  I have not had a firearm stolen but have had several $1800 - $2000 rifles damaged with UPS (2), FedEx (1) and two with USPS regular priority mail.  Of the three UPS was the worse to deal with.  The USPS refused to pay a claim on one and paid on the 2nd one only after several communications.  FedEx was the easiest and fastest to deal with (most likely due to a commercial account I have with them).  Some time ago Ken suggested I use USPS Registered Insured Mail.  Since then I've shipped around 50 rifles and none were damaged.  I should add that Registered Insured Mail is a special catagory of the USPS Priority Mail system and, as Ken noted, each person that touches the package has to sign off.  Two of the drawbacks when using USPS Registered mail is that special water activated tape must be used and the shipping fees are higher than with other shippers, but both are well worth it

This is all well and good if you have a good post office. Mine is the newest in the district, all the managers used the oppertunity to get rid of their malcontents. These people are openly hostil to doing any work. They make it as hard as possible to ship anything that they don't approve of and firearms are at the top of their list. I stopped going because I am afraide of what will happen once the package is in their care.
