I know what you mean about the post office, it all depends on whether they know you or not.At my present one, no problems at all.I used to live in Alameda and seldom went to the post office there.Once i had to ship a Ballard back to a well-known gun dealer.A friend of mine said ilshould ship regestered mail. I shipped it that way, when i got home i got a call from the clerk, "We don't Ship firearms, etc.".I finally won my argument by threating to call her boss, as i knew they did ship rifles. I never shipped with regestered mail again, and never had any problems as yet.

I used to have problems with my local postal station, so I called the main office and filed a complaint. The gentleman there was very nice and sounded like I asn't the first person to call him.
He sent me to a web site to download the regulations, so I could pack them in my pocket when I go to ship a rifle, and now I simply lay them on the counter and tell them to read up and learn THEIR rules, so I don't have to train them to do THEIR job.
He also told me that it is against their rules for a postal worker to ask you what's in the box, other than the usual 4 questions concerning hazardous, liquid, etc....
Here's the web site regulations link:

Look at 11.2 and 11.3 in particular. It's pretty plain, even to dummies that don't know the rules there.

I am sorry for your loss, I agree with all of the others. After the UPS stiffing me for a lousy $250.00 for a damaged rear sight I gave up. I learned real quick who pays and who does not pay.  With in two weeks of the first incedent my local USPS driver had my son sign for a damaged looking package he is over 21, and the hi wall butt stock was broken in two. USPS paid up in full in less than 30 days, I think I recievd my check 25 or 26 day's later. One year later UPS still refuses to budge. I have had large volume dealers tell me don't worry, I ship UPS and they never stiff me as I am a large customer. I go along with the idea that ship to me by USPS only or no money no matter how good the deal is, as a stolen or damaged gun is not a good deal.

From my own experiance, make sure you get an accurate description of your rifle as well as the serial number into the national police computer, that's the best place to start.

Since i've broken in and robbed three times and had a home invasion, i think i can say that theves are smarter than the general public. They always operate with knowedge, like the army.As to putting the stolen rifle in a computer list, forget it, a waste of timeand effort.I lost about $20,000 in Antiques and never got any of my rifles back. Listen to me, the polce only care about stolen PISTOLS. Start bulding a new`rifle.
