Stevens Walnut Hill

Concerning only the early origional Walnut Hill .22's, can anybody venture a guess as to how big a percentage of these things were done in .22 short as opposed to the more frequently seen long  rifles.
My impression is that the shorts began to fade as we progressed away from as much indoor gallery shooting towards WWI and after but have seen nothing definative. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I can't tell you a number on how many were done, as I see so few, but every one I've seen so far was a Walnut Hill based on the 44 action. Mine is such a gun, and I've seen a few others in .22 short that were on the 44. Can't remember seeing one in .22LR that was on a 44 1/2 action either?
Here's mine:

That's a Beaut. Mine is a 1" oct-round. No provision for sights, fitted with a Stevens scope. .22 short. Over and above being rare.... it's a beast.

I wish mine was 1"! Mine measures 1.125" at the receiver and tapers to .900 at the muzzle, and is 30" long! It's pretty muzzle heavy, and considering my bad shoulders, a bit much to hold offhand for long.

I mean mine is 1" straight-30". I have yet to see anything any heavier. Without any provision for a palm rest it is quite the chore to  hold it up there although it is fairly steady for the 10 seconds or so before your arm goes completely numb. Shocked

Interesting. I've never seen a Stevens barrel that wasn't a tapered octagon or half octagon. This extra heavy barrel on my Walnut Hill mics to 1.125", and is the only one I've owned that was over 1" at the chamber end.

Vall, my old stevens .22 is 1.00 at the breech and .998 at the muzzle and is 30" long. It is half round. Later, JAP
