For those of you who are not faimilar with Gary, he is a dealer who advertises regularly in Single Shot Exchange Magazine. I check his adds regularly and have talked to him on the phone a few times. He usually has some very interesting guns and accessories for sale. Finaly got to meet him and had time to chat for a while late in the afternoon when things slowed down. Realy interesting person to talk to. Knows a lot about single shots and had some great guns on the table. Unfortunately the one I really wanted was way over my budget. It is always fun to meet and talk to somone in the hobby like Gary. He did have a gun that I could afford and he offered me a good price, but I decided to pass on that one. I did pick up  a decent 414 Stevens in .22 short though. Good show overall.

I bought my first small item from Gary, an Ideal #5 powder measure, at least 15 years ago.  I find him to be fair and to have very good merchandise.  Sometimes, like slumlord44, it's too rich for my meager budget, but it is good stuff which I think seems fairly (retail) priced.  Gary has also helped with some exhibition stuff for ASSRA and with several books I know of such as Dutcher's Ballard book and both of Campbell's Single Shot Winchester books if I recall correctly.  When I win the lottery, I plan to call Gary (and Jim Goergen whose stock and business practices I also appreciate) and spend a lot of money real fast!  Cheesy

The only problem with these high-priced dealers isn't the money they want, it's the fact that there not really shooters and they do not look very closly at bores, i've returned at least three or more items from Jim Goergen because "If it's shiney it's mint or exec", this was NOT always true and sometimes you could see the pits, and in two cases there were bulges in the original barrel, that's not mint as i see it. One was a 32-40, the other was a 25-20 SS. I still like Jim Goergen however as he cheerfully returns your money, some dealers do not like returns at all.

Gary has been a great help to me too in my quest to become more knowledgable about the Stevens line. I have the good fortune of seeing him four times a year at the Allentown PA show. Just recently got a Stevens #47 recvr (DST) and a #5 full octagon 30" barrel in 32-40 from him. Very knowledgeable about the collection/historical information about the various lines of singleshots. He might not shoot them, but he has what the shooters used.

Gary, unlike some, is actually a pretty decent shooter. I have been very fortunate to have been able to score a couple pieces from him. It has been my experience, however, that with bore condition, particularly on something that might have seen black powder or corrosive priming, that asking some pretty specific questions hopefully avoids dissapointment down the road. As an adjunct to my benchrest involvement I swallowed hard and sprung for a borescope which has proved to have become invaluable since no matter what that bore seems like, the scope tells all. I am amazed that more higher end dealers don't have them. I assume it's the vintage arms version of "don't ask don't tell". Shocked

It is always an advantage to acquire the tools of our sport from someone who not only knows the names and the jargon of what we shoot and use, but it is quite another thing to deal with someone who is selling a product that he/she knows how to shoot effectively.  Take for instance Mr. Paul Shuttleworth and Gail.

I think it is a distinct advantage to purchase a target rifle from another target shoot, rather than from one of the numerous rifle salemen out there.  Accordingly, as ASSRA folks, I believe we should collectively support the organization's "For Sale" classified advertisers, both on this forum site, but also in the publication.

I know of specific cases where collectors deal with Gary Q. because he has contacts for locating specific Stevens products, with bore condition being secondary to the collector.  Gary's an interesting guy and a good business man, but not a target shooter.  At least not yet, but I never say never, so maybe some day.

I've never purchased a gun from Gary, but I've called and talked with him on sevral occasions, just to gather info. He's always taken time to share whatever knowledge he had freely, even though I'm not a customer and it didn't make him a dime of profit.
In my opinion that puts him in a whole other class from the average antique arms dealer.

No web site, and if he has an email address it isn't published.  He probably figures that serious customers will be willing to pay the price of a phone call.

Gary's phone number is (215) 766-3403.  He is well worth talking to.

I agree with Creedmoore match about dealing with people here on this website. Have not bought a gun yet but have gotten deals on sights, etc. I can usally get a better deal from an individual than a dealer. When I can't find what I am looking for anyhere, the large dealers are sometimes the only option to get what I want. I have found that the dealers will get a little more, but their overhead is a lot more and they are in business to make a profit. I have so far found most dealers, small and large, to be fair and honest in their descriptions and dealings. I am in the middle of a difference of opinion at this time with a small dealer on the described condition of a Stevens Model 10 Target pistol that I just recieved. Hope it gets resolved. This is the first gun that I have bought without actualy looking at it in person that has not been to my satisfaction. Of course I have also personaly examined a gun, got it home , and discovered that I missed a problem that I should have seen. Brown smelly stuff happens sometimes no matter what you do.

I've gotten a couple of rifles from Gary and always felt his discriptions were accurate in print in the Single Shot Exchange and in talking to him on the phone. Like Malinguy said he always seams to take time to talk or answer questions even though he may not make any money off the conversation. I look forward to his add in the Exchange and am disappointed when he dosen't have anythingfor sale that month.

SmileyAfter reading the comments above, I will add my 2 cents worth. Have known Gary for about 4 years from gun shows and telephone conversations and found him to be very accommodating & virtual encyclopedia of knowledge regarding singleshots and Schuetzen era. I've often wondered what his monthly phone bill is. He has aided me in obtaining needed additions to my collection especially items that for monetary reasons the auction house felt the need to sell separately. Gary and his wife, Marilyn, are gracious people. Have seen photos of his collection which is world class.  Bob
