Are there any pictures around of the internals of the Hammerless (striker fired) Ballards like Hubalek or Connie Grims make?

I think there was as a Journal article on that very subject several years ago.  I will have a look tonight and see if there is anything I can scan for you.

1878,
Please post them on this thread. I'm sure I'm not alone in also wanting to see them.
Thanks, Ron

FYI Wes Stanley / Rodney Storie sell a kit with the castings to make up a striker action Ballard breech block, which would require lots of careful machining as well as heat treating.

An interesting subject! Another striker conversion that I've asked about before (and got no info) is the Barning conversion for the high wall. Again, if anyone has any info on this one I'd love to hear about it.

Any chance the info that went by PM could be put on the site?

Many thanks!

I don't know about the Barning high-wall conversion, but Dale Reynolds did a very neat conversion on a low-wall that he has shot @ Etna Green a lot and that was written up in the SSR Journal a couple of years ago.  I wish I could get him to build me one, but he won't even talk about it!  Cry  I did see Frank Zika taking pictures and measurements one time, maybe we could get him to make one!

Froggie

PS  Has anybody been able to get any shipments of any kits or parts from Rodney or Wes lately?   Undecided

There is a cut away drawing of the Freund conversion both striker and internal hammer in Kelvers book FRANK AND GEORGE FREUND AND THE SHARPS RIFLE.

I believe that Bo Clerke at one time was offering a striker conversion for his own high wall action; the last time I heard about him, he was making barrels & other stuff in Raton, NM about 10 years ago. He may be able to shed some light on this for someone going to the Nationals there, if they'll visit his shop and ask. Good luck, Joe

Now, you know, there are even actions that are striker-fired by nature, and that don't have to be converted to do such...   Wink

yeah but-----some folk seem to take great pleasure in turning sow's ears into silk purses Wink  must be the challange or something.

There times when talking to the guys on the line at Etna Green that I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't have a small machine shop in my basement--or a machinist friend in my hip pocket
guess I'm just machinistly challanged

...or is it a silk purse into a sow's ear?)  Roll Eyes

Hang around me @ E-G Wayne, as I have neither my own machinist nor my own machine shop, although I'm working on the latter.  I had noted previously that folks who REALLY participate heavily in this game tend to either be machinists or have very deep pockets to afford having some pretty sophisticated work done.  The third alternative is to hustle around and impose on the good will of folks in the first two categories or provide some special product or service they will take in full or partial trade for the toys you just can't live without.  There doesn't seem to be any real cheap way to do this otherwise, or if there is, I sure wish somebody would reveal it to me!!  Cheesy

Well, I could probably make either a Highwall or Ballard conversion but can't see the need. They work fine as designed with a hammer! Seems like a solution in search of problem to me. MD

This, to me, is a far better deal than the mere exchange of $. Most of us who like these rifles are relatively mature, at least in years (VBG), and tend to be more interested in our feeling of personal satisfaction rather than the dollars. The exchange of personal products & services, either instead of or in addition to cash, provides unparalleled opportunities not only to acquire things that would otherwise be out of reach, but also (and far more importantly) to make a new friend who shares your interests. Even if you never interact with that particular person again due to circumstances or distance, you will remember him and get a warm feeling every time you look at the thing he traded you.
I know I do, regards, Joe
