Seems that the italians once offered a low wall in 38/55 but i have never seen one offered for sale.  I would like to have one with 30" barell and special sporting pistol grip.  Does anyone have in info on these rifle?

Uberti I believed once offered a high wall in 38-55. I looked at their web page
and for the 2008 catalog it appears they no longer do so. Having said that, one of the gentlemen on the castboolits web site did purchase one from cimaron and has some barrel related issues. I believe the issues were gouges in the barrel and others. You can check on this if you wish by going to castboolits@gunloads.com then scroll down to single shot rifles and looking up the 38-55 threads. They did not replace the bbl and just recut the crown. General consensus regarding their handling of this problem among the folks there was not good. FWIW, regards Frank

I was looking for a low wall reproduction for a while in either .32-40 or .38-55 but never found one so I bought .32-20 low wall from Taylors & Co.  It had a very bad chamber.  The barrel was replaced by Taylor's under warranty but that process took 6 months.  (I was told that Uberti had to make up a .32 barrel special, then have it proofed and shipped, etc. etc.  The new barrel seems to be very nicely bored, rifled and crowned, however).

Anyway, while I think Taylors did every thing they could, the experience soured me Uberti products - which I had been told were the best quality reproductions.

Just to add what little I know to the mix, I have not seen any .32-40 or .38-55 low-wall examples from Uberti, but have seen the .38-55 high-wall.  The few I have seen were quite nice for the price, and seemed to be without "issues" other than the fact that the bore size tended to run a little large.  The one whose testing I participated in (see Apr/May SSR-J) needed a bullet up in the .382" or bigger range to really do well.  I would be most happy to start campaigning that very rifle if it had the now-available double set triggers and a Swiss style butt plate.  This is JMHO, and is worth almost as much as you paid for it!   Wink

I do not think a 38/55 or 32/40 on a low wall action, even a modern action, is a particularly good idea.   OK for current factory loads, I suppose, but these two cartridges can be hotted up to develop a good back thrust.

John, glad to hear that you got a really beautiful rifle. The wood is great. Frank
