Tommy Mason Range Closed

"We had an incident at the range recently when a 13 year-old was shooting a rifle with hand loads a relative had loaded. The rifle failed. I think the boy will be fine. However, pieces of metal penetrated the skin in two places just above his right eye. (They are still in there.)
The thought of how close this kid came to eye damage on the range that I provided was a wake-up call.
I wouldn't want anybody to get hurt shooting, but the thought of a 13 year-old possibly being blind was too much.
I have closed the range to all shooting except our monthly 22 RF matches.
This will end the 400 shot match and the regional at this location.

Sincerely,

Tommy Mason"

This is a sad day for all of us both in Canada and the USA !!!
Our hope is that the boy recovers fully and enjoys the pleasures of shooting as many of us do.
The spring shoot at Tommy's was and is, a big part of our shooting events, plans and memories.
I sincerely hope that Tommy will reconsider but I do understand how he feels.
Thnxs Tommy

This is just a thought and I'm sure that I'll see Tommy in Raton next month, but the NRA offers low cost insurance for rifle matches, so for a reasonable fee he can cover his liabilities. I'll try to have my homework done by August, so I can give him some figures, this would make more sense than closing his range.

I have no idea of the details of the incident or what the cirumstances are at the range, but it seems to me to be a shame to close down a range because of one unfortunate incident. Bad stuff happens no matter how careful people are. Hope it can be resolved without shutting down the range permanently. People do not quit driving a car just because they have an accident.
