" Bass "  has left us

Most people called him  “ BASS “.   Marlin Remington Bassett died on Saturday, 7 June 2008 at about 8:30 AM.  He was diagnosed with  Pancreatic Cancer late last year.

With a name like his, could he be anything but a shooter???   And a shooter he was.  Modern bench rest in days gone bye.  His true love was muzzle loaders, specifically slug guns.  He only gave them up when the physical work of loading took the fun out of it.  Bass  was in on the ground floor of the formation of the Western New York Schuetzen Society and served as its Schutzenmeister until very recently.  Shot his last 250 at the July 07 match.  Shot quite a lot at Etna Green and would have done better at his shooting  if he had not been a constant experimenter.  It was always best to get his opinion on the latest nutty idea.  Usually saved a lot of trouble.

A better story of his life was written in a great article by Terry Morgan in the March – April ASSRA Journal, 2005

Bass was the real deal    -    a fine man,     a fine  shooter,   and  always  a  gentleman.     We will miss him.

Your right Bass was the real deal. I started my ASSRA shooting at the Alabama Hunt Club and one of the first people that I met was Bass. He incouraged me and helped a bumb kid learn what the single shot game was about. Even after I moved from western NY I looked forward to seeing Bass at Etna Green or visiting him on the slug gun line at Friendship. Never have the words "We are diminished" meant so much to me.

I first met Bass about 24 years ago at Friendship, Indiana where I went to compete on the roundball range but quickly found myself at the far left side of the rifle line where large and wounderous hunks of iron were making huge, sonic booms.  I was a very, very green shooter and the first person to greet me was a man I came to know as Bass.  For years he camped in a tent next to the trailer belonging to Jake Simmons which was known as "The Swamp".  I camped with Jake, next to Bass's tent and remember the volume of Bass's snoring as being somewhat like rolling thunder!

Bass was one of the kindest and open men I have ever met.  He tutored me in the art of the slug gun, wind and mirage reading, and in the art of life.  His life was not without personal tragedy but he carried himself with a quiet dignity that any of us could aspire to.

I will miss seeing him at Etna Green sitting at his bench next to the red light, waiting for just the right moment to pull the trigger or sitting on the bench with Jim Borton watching the world go by.

Bass will be sorely missed....

A really sad day for the traditional shooting sports.   Bass was one of the genuine "old breed" at our game.

Of all the things I was able to do in my brief stint as Editor, getting the article on Bass in print was the thing I felt best about.

I'm having a real hard time writing this.  One of the lights at Etna Green has gone out.
When we get around to redoing the benchs at EG, as discussed at the Spring meeting, put me down to chip in for a memorial plaque on "Bass's" bench

Even before I knew who he was by name, I knew that Bass was that nice guy from the New York contingent.  He was one of the few guys about whom it could truly be said that the better you got to know him, the better you liked him.  Always mild and soft spoken with a little smile under that old mustache, he was just nice to be around.  Bass, we will miss you my friend.  Rest in peace in the arms of the Lord.

You are all quite correct and very eloquent.  Not that its hard to find good words to say about Bass.

If not already done, will someone please post this sad news where people from the NMLRA will see it.  Bass had many, many friends there.
         thank you.         andyz
