SmileyCan someone clear up a question ? Did Marlin make Everlasting cases in 32/40 ? I have been told by reliable source they did not, but have seen boxes labeled as such for sale which appear authentic. Appreciate any info.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I can't say for sure if Marlin made Everlasting cases for the .32-40 Ballard, but I know for sure that there were indeed Everlasting .32-40 cases made for the Ballard by both Remington-UMC and Peters.
If you get your hands on a copy of John Dutcher's book on the Ballard Rifles, page 312 has a picture of the Everlasting cases sectioned, and show both paper patched Ballard .32-40, and lubed Rem-UMC  Ballard .32-40 cases in Everlasting type.-Vall

Don't know if Marlin actually made their own brass. But I am sure they chambered rifles for Everlasting cases. I once owned at the same time a Ballard A-1 Midrange and the Barrel was stamped 40-65. I also owned a ballard Pacific and it was stamped 40-70. Now cases fired in both of these rifles were nearly identical in outside measurements. I was informed by a serious collector that the difference was the 40-65 was a Everlasting case Rifle and the thicker walls reduced the capacity to 65 Grs of Black Powder. By the way these rifles were intended to be shot with BORE size Paper Patch bullets. You could not get a Groove size cast bullet in the shell without causing a bulge and the shell would not go fully into the chamber by about 3/8" HTH. Regards, FITZ. Smiley
