What about Meachum actions

Give me a  lesson on Meachum actions.  How do they compare to other modern actions like the Miller.  Think one would be suitable for a offhand rifle ?  Saw one for sale built up as a bench gun, real rough job but the action seems to be OK.  Rest is scrap.

Are you asking about the Meacham built Hoch action or his High Wall copy?  There is a write-up/review of the Hoch type in the Frank DeHaas book: A Potpourri of Single Shot Rifles and Actions.

Boats, I have a Meacham Hiwall in 40-70SS. It shoots well as little as I have shot it. The parts appear to be interchangable with original 1885s with a couple of exceptions. He made some changes that I feel were worthwhile. On the front of the reciever below the barrel he has two
1/4-20 tapped holes that I believe are for free floating a forend if it was so desired for bench shooting. The Breech block is fitted up with a Niedner type high pressure style firing pin. In order to overcome the objection to this as regarding dragging the firing pin tip with the hammer resting on it he has changed the link cam that cammed the firing pin back in the original design and now has the bigger cam that cams the hammer off the spring loaded firing pin so that it can retract itself before the breech block starts to move down. He also replaced the spring or split pin that goes through the breech block for the hammer to pivot on to a shoulder screw across the breech block. The action is a Coil Spring type. The wide spaced set triggers are identical to the original version and I feel they would work in an original action
although I have not tried to swap them. All in all I would not hesitate to recomend a Meacham action. HTH. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Thanks guys based on 1878's tip checked Meachums web site who has a bit of history on his actions. This is one of his early Hoch actions on a modern set up bench rifle.  The gun has a pure ugly stock and throw a way scope, large rusty outside barrel in some 30 cast bullet wildcat.

At a thousand dollars it's high for a project rifle, I would be buying it for the action only.  I think the best thing to do would be to call Meachum himself next week, He ought to know it's history and could price barreling it up for me.

Thinking pure offhand rifle in a 7mm short case.
